A deni.il comes to hand of the
rumor that Governor Lounsbery is
known to be the giver of the $125,
000 presented to the Yale Univer
sity recently. The giver himself
and President Dwight are declared
to be the only persons who have
positive knowledge about it, and
they won't tell. There is another
story extant that ex-President
Porter is the man.
Twenty-seven years ago the Rev.
Dr. Howard Crosby, then a profes
sor in the University of the City of
New York, thought New York
should have a branch of the Young
Men's Christian Association, and
thereupon he organized one, the
Boston and Providence organiza
tions being the present ones. Nine
sub-branches have sprung up in
New York from this first branch,
which the leading ministers of the
time tried to frown down. The
association's membership in New
York is now about 5,000, and its
library contains over 35,000
volumes.
Now Has Faith.
I had been troubled all winter with
cold and pain in the chest and got no
relief from remedies recommended by
Druggists and Physicians. At the same
time I was advertising Dr. Bosanko's
Cough and Lung Syrup. I had little
faith, but thought to try it as a last resort,
now I believe" even more than they tell
me of its curative qualities. From the

Philadelphia Press: The action
of the Ohio convention has revealed
the scheme of the Cleveland admin
istration far more plainly than any
other thing has done. The neces
sity for a harmonious policy on the
tariff question in Congress and in
the party conventions has been
openly proclaimed. The declaration
of the Ohio Democrats under the
circumstances is a notice that the
Democratic majority in the coming
House will be required to make a
substantial free-trade record for the
party, and those will not be regard
ed as Democrats who fail to come
in under the policy of the administration.

New York Tribune: The Re
publicans would be glad to see the
Democratic party take a definite
position on the tariff and the sur
plus question. It would especially
help them to see public patronage
employed to guillotine Democrats
who reject an administration tariff.
The process would make the coun
try understand what Mr. Cleveland's
"reform" really means, and what
kind of tariff is to be expected from
the election of a Democratic Presi
dent. The growth of industries at
the South, and the development of
public opinion in Western and
Southern States on the necessity of
sustaining agriculture by building
up manufactures and enlarging the
home market, would render the
result sufficiently certain.
As a young officer doing duty
with a Madras cavalry regiment,
Sir Edward Bradford was a keen
sportsman. One day when tiger
snooting he "missed his mark," and
soon found himself in the tiger's
clutches. It was an anxious 'mo
ment, few of his friends being at
hand. As a sportsman of experi
ence, Sir Edward knew well that
the best-course was to lie quietly
and sham death. The tiger survey
ed his prey, looked around, and
thinking all was safe, set steadily to
work to make his meal. Taking
the young officer's hand in his
mouth it was steadily disposed of,
and the arm eaten to the elbow,
before Sir Edward's companions
came up and released him. The
cool resolution of the man in feign
ing death had been the means of
saving what has since proved to be
a most valuable life; for, as Sir Ed
ward says when telling the story,
had he moved, or uttered even a
groan, the tiger would have put an
end to his existence )efore going on
with his repast. Of course the
shattered arm had to be removed
from the shoulder. It may be im
agined what the suffering was
which the victim endured while
lying, quite conscious, in the power
of a voracious ''man eater."

Dickens fired his revolver to awake
the echoes of Killarney; result, five
hours of delay with police and ma

discovering too much. Writes he:
"Whenever you see the word Fitz
in an English name you may guess
that it might be descended from an
illegitimate branch. Fitz was .a
corruption of his, or son, and when
a king or prince had a bastard
whom he acknowledged he called
him Fitzgerald, or Fitzmorris, or

A few days ago Alderman Sal
breiter, of the Seventh ward, issued
invitations for a feast to the friends
of his dead wife, who were kind to
her during her last sickness. Last
night the event occurred, and was
one long to be remembered by those
present. A large number of unin
vited persons took advantage of the
hospitalities extended, and made the
gathering one revelry. Liquid re
freshments were the Grder. The
host used his utmost endeavors to
eject the disorderly parties, but
failed. On the streets outside the
lawn over 3,000 people congregated
to witness the festivities. The fact
that physicians had been appointed
to enquire into Mr. Salbreiter's men
tal condition, enhanced the interest
in the event. Racine Special.

It may not be generally known
that among tho'se who have been
deprived of railroad passes under the
new order of things are the elders
of the Mormon church. Owing to
the peculiar wording of the law,
which permits free transportation to
ministers of religion, the disciples of
Brigham Young are denied the priv
ilege which is still extended in the
reduced fair to orthodox clergymen.
The Mormon elders are not regu
larly ordained ministers, and conse
quently are not in charge of regu
larly stated congregations contigu
ous to lines over which reduced rates
are requested; hence the denial of
the benefits referred to. What
effect this has had upon Mormon
evangelization it would be hard to
tell, but that it has materially in
creased the expenses of that sect
may be gathered from the frequent
reports of its members' indefatigue
able labors among the unbelievers
in this country ami iix Europe.

A Violent Form of Cholera Morbus at Belknap,
Iowa, Prostrates the Wholo Community.
A Plain Statement ofTacts by a Leading Mer

Last summer we had an epidemic in this com
munity in the form of cholera morbus. Nearly
every man. woman and child was prostrated by
it. and it seemed to be a very violent form. Wo
tried everj' medicine wo could find without relief.
I then went to Ottumwa and Blake. Bruce & Co.,
wholesald druggists, advised me to take homo
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Kem
edy. I done so and distributed it, and it gave
relief immediately; it worked like magic. I or
dered more of the remedy at once, and sold it
during the day at my store and at night at my
homo. I sold as much during the night as I did
during tho day. The people hero cannot say
enough in praise of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera
