The danger of spontaneous combustion In this causes a serious fire hazard, rnd unusual care should ho cvrclsed by the owners of such properties The hazard can be re duced hy proper select ion of the graile and sizes of soft coal, anil the exercise of proper precautions In its handling and storage. Where large quantities of soft coal are stored in the open It should be in sepatale piles, so that a fire starling will not spread through the entire supply, and -the affected pile ran be extinguished or moved. Where I lie coal is stored In basements the Fuel Administration suggests the follow ing precautions: 1. Coal the site of a walnut or larg er Is well adapted for storing. Mine run, slack or screenings, on account of fine coal and dust, an not suited for storage In a base ment. N'eei place coal near a hot pipe, against a hot furnace or any other hot surfr.ee. 3. Do not mix ashes with the ool, as there may be live coals In the ashes. 4. If coal must be wet down, wet only the portion that Is to be used Immediately. G.
