SWINE RAISING AS A BUSINESS Breeder Should Not Mrke It Second ary to Farming Operation Why Many Men Fail. In a recent discussion of the points to be observed by a hog breeder, V. F. McFadden, secretary of the American l'oland China Record uhsoi lat ion, said : The hog man should make hug rais ing his lriiiciiul business; he should Hot make it secondary to his farming operations, and It should he the cen tral Idea around which revolve till bis active business operations. A hug man should be a hog man ;it5 days In the year. He criticized those breeders whose enthusiasm was shortlived, urg ing them to take pride lu their busi ness and in every little detail con cerning It. He thought that crates should be made light, good and at tractive and that stationery should be neat, to the point and indicative of the methods of doing business Ha thought good stationery added dignity to the business aud made a good im pression. Concerning what to ralee, he said that a good many hog men failed be cause they did not offer for sale the kind of stock the buyers were wanting to buy. He appreciated that It was au art for any man to recognize what kind of a hog would be In der-xnd and be prepared to supply It He urged breeders to keep clear of fads and hog bubbles. He believed that salesman ship, says the Oklahoma Farmer, wa Important and that It was only possi ble to be a good salesman by having a thorough knowledge of Individuality of animals as well as a knowledge of good business practices. Talking about feeding aud care, he said that a hog should be well bred and that improvement was the result of good care and good feed. There waa no success without these and good judgment in selection. SOUTHDOWN SHEEP IN FAVOR One of Most Popular Breeds and Quite Extensively Bred Furnished Good Quality of Fleece. The Southdown Is one of our popu lar mutton breeds of sheep md Is quite extensively bred The t -eed i ... -y 5 . VC, Two-Year-Old Southdown Ram. hornless; the face and legs are of a gray-brown color. The best rams, when fat, often weigh from 176 to 200 pounds, the ewes from 123 to 150. The body is rather blocky. This breed furnisbes a fleece of good quality, weighing from six to seven pounds. The wool Is rather short, but of medium fine texture. The mutton is of excellent quality. The Southdown ewes often produce two lambs at a birth, and sometimes three. They are a very valuable breed for early lambs as the lambs grow rapidly. The Southdown is an English breed, taking ltf name from the Southdowns, the broken and hilly lands of Sussex and neighboring counties of England. MORE HOG PASTURES NEEDED Subscribe for The Herald fl.50 per year. Most Reliable Crops Are Rape, Rye, Wheat and Barley Sow on Spe cially Prepared Land. According to the department of ag riculture, to produce pork profitably bogs muBt feed and graze continuously on pastures and crops particularly planted for them. Very seldom is the growing of hogs for slaughter a source of profit, unless proper grazing and feeding methods are followed. In the spring, summer and fall there are many crops for pasturing bogs, but during the winter the crops to se lect from are limited. On almost ev ery farm th3 production and keeping of hogs In winter is expensive, and generally it is not profitable for the reason that large quantities of corn are fed without products of green crops. More winter grazing Is needed for which many crops are adapted. The mo6t reliable are rape, rye, wheat and barley. For grazing pur poses these pasturing crops for hogs should be sown on specially well drained and prepared land, that is either rich or has received a libera) application of manure. Good winter pasturage Is not obtained except on the best-drained lands. Profitable Side Line. One factor about the sheep business la worthy of special emphasis. This industry is one of the most profitable side lines that can fit the operations of the general farm. Sheep require little attention during the sowing, baying, cultivating or harvesting seasons when the time of the farmer is needed elsewhere. It is during periods when the farmer has plenty of leisure that the necessity arises for according the flock additional care and attention. (By I IK'K. V. II. ri!W, Inwa AfTli ul turnl t'ollnptp.) Huttermllk when free from water, used for washing the butter, nukes excellent fed for hogs. The great trouble as we find it coming from the creameries Is that it la hard to determine how much excess water Is contained In It. At the present price fur feeds, 1 think you will be safe In paying 20 cents per 100 pounds for buttermilk that Is fite from excess of water. For sows that are nursing young pigs, it should be fed In very small quantities, If at all. and I would sug gest diluting It. Hotter results would he had if the buttermilk is not put Into the ration until the pigs are at least four or five weeks old. It la particularly good for growing pigs, as well as fattening hogs. The show far rows at this college are always fed and finished on corn and buttermilk. 1 A good ration for sows that are ... . i nursing pigs or an age wnen no trouble will be had from scouring, would be as follows: Corn meal, one part; bran, two parte, with buttermilk, three to four pounds for each pound of grain mixture. Corn and buttermilk afford a very good ration for fattening hogs. For growing pigs It might be of advan tage to make a slop of shorts and buttermilk, and feed corn on the ear besides.
