For more than a year past north
western Nebraska has not had aa
much rain as has been needed, al
though we have been having good
rains lately. Last year some crops
were good, others were poor. This
year rye and some other small grain
has been Injured by dry weather;
but the late small grain, corn and
potatoes are doing fine, and pasture
Is good.
Many other sections, even In low
er altitudes, have suffered worse
from drought this year than this
country. A heavy rain In New York
within the last few weeks broke the
drought. In some portions of east
ern Nebraska and Kansas, consid
ered reliable as agricultural districts,
small grain was badly damaged by
lack of rain early In the season.
One of The Herald's Illinois ex
changes, the Abingdon Kodak, pub
lished in the richest portion of that
great farming state, says in its is
sue of June 13th, "The practical fail
ure of the oats and wheat crop will
make a big bole tn local business
this summer. The elevators will be
practically idle and the threshers
will have but a short Job."
The drought in Missouri has be
come so severe that Governor Had
ley has been requested to appoint a
day for prayer for rain.
TOM BOYER GET8 BROKEN LEG
On Tuesday morning Tom Boyer
met with an accident that will lay
him up for a while. He was running
his steam plow outfit on Bert Car
penter's place southwest of Alliance.
In lu Meyers was driving the water
wagon. Boyer wanted to get on to
the water wagon, but without wait
ing for It to stop. His foot slipped
througli the wheel, and before he
could extricate it, the leg was brok
en above the ankle.
