An exchange says that a Beatrice boy pursued a rabbit to tho bottom of a sixty foot well and just as ho reached the bottom tho well caved in and it took many hours of hard digging to get liitn out. It is not reported whether or not he got the rabbit. Judging from the following from the Norfolk Press, we would say that re cent mail service on the Northwestern R. R. is worse than on the parallel line of the Burlington: "The Lincoln Jour nal of Sunday morning reached our ex change table Monday afternoon. The mail service is improving somewhat." Tho Fremont papers tell of a waiter girl in one of the hotels of that burg who appeared in the doorway of the diuing room at meal time clad iu noth ing but a nighty, and one of tho Nor folk papers insinuates that the publica tion of the news item was onlv a sly way the Fremont hotel had of adver tising, wvww. Cwnty Clerk Becomes District Census Director installed a stenographer, and will plunge into the census work of the Sixth district, which will require his entire, time during the greater portion of the coming year. A preacher, at the conclusion of one of his sermons, said: "Let all in the house who are paying their debts stand up." Instantly every man, woman, and child, with oifc exception, rose to their feet. Tho preacher seated them and said: "Now, every man not paying his debts stand up." .The exception noted, a careworn, hungry-looking in dividual, clothed in his last summer's suit, slowly assumed a perpendicular position. "How is it, my friend," asked the minister, "that you are the only man not to meet his obligations?" Broken llow Chief. Doc. IT: At the opening session of the county board on Tuesday morning, Jos. Pig man tendered his resignation as county clerk to take effect at once. The resig nation was accepted and W. H. Os borne, Jr., present deputy and also county clerk-elect, was appointed to All out the unexpired term. While the resignation of Mr. Pieman comes ub a surprise to the general public, yet it has been known to his immediate friends for some time that he contem plated this move. Mr. Pigman has recently been appointed census direct or of the sixth congressional district of Nebraska, and it was the urgent ne cessity of his devoting his entire time to his new duties that prompted him to break away fiom the county clerk's office during the last few weeks of his term. Mr- Pigman has been connect ed with this office, first as deputy and then as prinoipal, for nearly eight yearn and is known as one of the most competent officials the county ever had. He has established un office on the second floor of the Baisrh Block, has Roy Kent went to Minatare last week. Chas. Burleigh returned to Lakeside Monday. Mr. Stanley went to Bridgeport Tuesday. Mrs. Mabin was a passenger to Al liance Monday. K. L. Pierce went to Alliance Thurs day, returning Friday. C. S. West has been under the weather for the last week. Mrs. H. H. Pierce returned from her visit to Chadron Monday. Ed. Stigle and wife left Thursday for a visit at Ashland, Nebr. Nellie Colvin came up from Alliance Thursday, returning Monday. Lizzie Johnson came Thursday to spend the holidays with her parents. W. M, Spencer was a passenger to Alliance Friday, returning Saturday. Rex Mosher came home from Gor don to spend the holidays with his father. Mr. Smith, a son of L. Smith and wife, came Thursday from Logan county. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Rockey left for a visit to their old home in Pennsyl vania last week. E. A. Peckenpough left Monday foi his dd hune in Senecn. Ham Hall and Jake Osborn left Sun day for their old home in Virginia and Pennsylvania,, Miss Sweeney and Miss Roberts came up from Alliance Sunday, re turning Monday. Lewis Kuhn and wife came Thurs day from Livingston, Mont., for a visit with his brother, Joe. Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe Friemuth are the proud parents of a baby boy, born Tuesday, Dec 14, '09, Lena Wildy came Thursday from Illinois to spend the winter, coming for the benefit of her health. E. Rasmussen left for a visit to Iowa. His family is there and they expect to return home with him. Clark Old, Mr. West and Ben John son went to Omaha last week to attend the corn show and hardware conven tion. Mr. Barge came Monday from Fair bury, Nebr,, to see his brother, James, who has been seriously ill tor the past week.
