' Mrs' Frank Chambers of Sheridan, daughter of Mrs. Clara 13. Hill, is visiting in Alliance. Conductor K. J. Burko is taking a lay-off to visit his folks in Lincoln. Conductor Frank O'Connor takes his car during his absence. While working with a disabled en gine at Seneca last Friday night, Dick Kcnncr had a main rod fall on him in such a manner as to slightly injuro his back. Ho deadheaded to Alliance and is laid up for a few days. Supt. L. B. Lyman of tho Wymoro division, who formerly was at Sheridan and later Sterling, passed through Al liance in his private car Saturday, en route to Sheridan. Conductor Cool was rather badly bruised about the head by a fall at Reno Sunday morning; ho returned to Alliance for medical treatment, and was able to go out Monday. Operator Maxwell, of Mr. Kennedy's office, has returned from his eastern trip. QAgcnt Brownjif Lakeside is laying off sick and is being relieved by Extra Agent Parkinsont 'Mr. BrtAvn's mother of Hccla is at Lakeside to help out during his illncSS. C. D. Conn, formerly night chief dispatcher at Alliance, and at present running a train between Ravenna and Seneca wbb in town last week. Engineer A. E. Nelson struck some cars at Ardmoro Tuesday night in such a manner as to turn his engine over on its Bide. The derrick outfit had just finished a job of picking up a car at Hazard and was sent to Ardmoro. The main line was not blocked, hence traffic was not delayed any on account of this accident. Owing to a derailment near Sheridan No. 42 was several hours late Wednes day, going through as first section of No. 44. No. 368 train was run through to Seneca and connected with No. 40, the latter tiain taking the Dcadwood connection through to Lincoln. Conductor Hatvcrstadt of the cast end was taken sick at Seneca Sunday night and went to Ravenna on No. 40. He has recovered sufficiently to tako his run out. Passenger business has dropped off considerably the past few days, there not being nearly the coast travel that there was a few weeks ago. ' V The Chicago papers arc (till of ar ticles relative to- a coming speed war between the several roads leading from Chicago to the coast. Jlo Hill lines. havo asked tho government for the contract for carrying the mail from Chicago to Seattle, agreeing to make tho run in sixty-two hours. It is prob able that this run, if puton, will bo via St Paul and will not affect this line of tho Burlington ycr much. The Burlington has notficd competitive roads that they will flo longer hold their through passenger, trains down to .the time agreed upon some time ago, and making preparations to shorterf'tlie time of trains No. 1 and 6 between Chicago and Dcuvcr and are conteni: plating running No. 6 via Pacific Junc tion and not going through Omaha, No. 1 has for several years run via Pacific function. Whether this speed war will materially affect this territory remains to bo seen. Card of Thanks. On His Way to the Phillipines. Orvillu Collins received a letter and several cards from his daughte? and son-in-law, W. J. O'Brien, who left hero the foro part of August for Manila, where Mr. O'Brien has a position witli Uncle Sam in the war department. They left San Francisco on the 5th and were eight days on the water from there to Honolulu, and write that they had so far had a pleasant journey and wcro taking in ttie sights of that beauti ful city, which is a most attractive place to visit. They were to leavo Honolulu on Monday and tho balance of the journey will take but a few days. Chadron Chronicle. Mr. O'Brien is a brother of Mrs. W. J. Hamilton of this city, and received promotion to the Phillipino service while residing in Omaha several weeks ago. County Fair Notes. The new raco track on which the speed events will be pulled off during tho coining Box Butte county fair, is now almost completed and horse meq declare that it is as fine a pieco of track as can be found in the state- E. V, Sweeneyjoe Vaugn,Gco. MolIring,who had the constructing of the samo under their supervision, are to be congratu lated oil the excellent work done. Es pecial thanks arc due to Mr Sweeney who gave the greater part of his time to the building of the track, Arrangements have been made where by Sheriff John Owens of Weston county, Wyoming, Inis been secured. to act as official starter of the races at the fair. Mr. Owens is well qualified to take charge of this feature and write Geo. Mollring that ho will do all ho can to help tho boys out. Tho building committee, composed of Messrs. Wm. James and W. D. Mr. Mordock is a young hi an of good address and comes well recommended from his homo town as the following extract from tho Ne braska City News will attest: ' William B.
