Jodcr lias re turned from the coast and resumed his duties. W. E. Zollinger left for a visit in IlHnoiB Tuesday morning. Chas. Reed has his run. Mr. and Mrs. Schlupp of Mr. Bird sell's office are enjoying an outing in the Black Hills. Pat Nolan, who has been doing some work on his ranch, has returned to work on the road. Engineer Huston of Ravenna was in Alliance last Thursday, returning to Seneca the next day. Engineer John Nicolai has Fred Al len's run on Nos. 44 and 41 while the latter is enjoying a vacation. Extra Agent Chas. Tripletl is reliev ing W. L. Ayer at Crawford, while tho later is enjoying his annual vacation. No. 41 Tuesday night was run from Ravenna west in two sections, arriving iu Alliance with a total of twenty cars. Engineer George Riddle and Fireman Caulk camo up from Seneca Monday, returning to Seneca on No. 4G Tuesday night. Operator J. S. Jacques of Seneca has been prpmoted to Edgemont. A newcomer, Mr- Shclton, relieved him at Seneca. Don B. Wagner of the trainmaster's department has rented a cottage on Toluca avenue and commences house keeping this week. Engine 28C8 of the "S 1" type has been received from the cast and will bo put in passenger service on this divi sion after being broken in. W. L. Davis, who worked as night operator at Mcrna and Ansclmo about three years ago, has re-entered the service and is working nights at Broken Bow. Conductor Ed Laudrigan came up from Ravenna on 42 last Sunday to meet his wife who was visiting Mr. and Mrs. Denny Landrigan, on her return from a visit at Hot Springs. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brown at Lakeside Sunday morning. Mr. Brown is tho Burling ton agent at Lakeside and now has three boys to help him in his strenu ous duties. Plett's gang of linemen, who have been rebuilding the telegraph and tele phono along the line for more than a year, have been moved from Ashby to Thedford, where they will make their headquarters while working in that vi cinity, A new train crew has been put on between Ravenna and Seneca, Extra Runner Wilson getting it. Engineer Grabbert has been sent down to do the extra running out of Ravenna. This makes eight crews working between Ravenna and Seneca. Conductor Rad Randall fell and was pretty badly bruised about the head at Dooley this morning. He left his train at Dooley and was brought to Alliance witli his engine and way car for medical aid. He is not seriously hurt and will no doubt be around in a few days. The depot at Hyannis was burned to the ground Tuesday morning. Agent Prettyman lost practically all of his household goods but succeeded in sav ing a few of tho company records. He is now located in some box cars fitted up as an office until a new building is erected. The cause of the fire is tin kuown. Rumors are afloat that the Great Northern is to operate the west end of the Sheridan Division and tho branch lines in Wyoming. This means a great deal for railroad men, as natur ally an interchange arrangement with this line at this point will require more men. The Burlington, it is reported, will operate no line in Montana. Sher idan Post. Allen Toomey arrived in Alliance on No. 44 last Thursday to relieve Ralph Huebner, who is being transferred to Deadwood. Mr- Huebner bus worked for the company four months and has made many friends during his short stay here who regret seeing him leave, but who rejoice with him in his new position as it is considered a very good promotion. No. 46 Saturday night was run in two sections from Alliauce east. The second section was a train of sixty cars of stock, all local shipments from Gil lette east and from the Guernsey line. The first section picked up about thir ty cars of stock east of here, making nearly ninety cars of stock into Ra venna. This is the greatest amount of stock, which all consisted of local shipments, that has been put into Ra venna in one day for some time. Railroad Notes from Edgemont (I'roni last Friday's Express) Chris Schaefer has been transferred to Alliance to work in the shops there. The force at the round house is being Increased on account of the big amount of business being done by the road. S. M. Lampkin has been transferred from the car shops here to those of Al liance, and left for there this week, Work is progressing between here and Alliance where the Burlington is taking up the 65 pound rails and laying down the 85. Carload after carload of ballasting is being sent there and the work train is busy all the time. The road bed over the line is being gotten into fine shape. The official special, on which were Vice President D. Willard, Second Vice Presi dent Darius Miller, Chief Engineer T. . Calvert, General Passenger Agent F. H. Eustice and General Freight Agent C. E. Spends, arrived in Edgemont Wednesday morning and waited for train 45, on which was General Manager Holdredge. The special then pulled out west for a trip of inspection of the west end of their line, and will also go over the ground to Ther- mopolis and see what has been doing on the divisions around there. Superintend ent Birdsell was with them as far as Edge mont, where he dropped off to attend im portant business. General Superintend ent Bracken and Superintendent Young of the Sheridan division accompanied the special west. rS LOCAL PARAGRAPHS. E- G. Laing spent Sunday at Seneca. Baschky, Attorney Gilman made a business trip to Uemingford Tuesday, returning on 42 yesterday. Mrs. H. J. Ellis returned the last of last week from a visit with fiiends and relatives at Lincoln. W. H. Cheney of Franklin is look ing after business interests in Box Butte county this week. The Woman's Club will meet with Mrs. J. A. Mallery tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. S. C. Boon is one of the many cattle men of this section who have marketed cattle in South Omaha recently. Mrs. C C. Smith's Sunday-school class will be enjoying a picnic at Att's grove, two miles north of the city, this afternoon. A. Triplett is greeting old fiiends in Alliance, and will remain here a few weeks. He reports everything lovely on the coast. Mrs. W. E. Spencer entertained the First Presbyterian Ladies' Aid in the Sunday-school rooms of the church yesterday afternoon. S. K. Warrick and family are enjoy ing a vacation at Hot Springs, S. D. Mr. Warrick will return soon on ac count of business matters, but Mrs. Warrick and the children will prolong their vacation a few weeks. Mrs. Lester gave a theatre party last evening in honor of her niece, Miss McKeever of Indiana. Attorney Simonson, formerly one of tho legal luminaries of this city but now of Denver, is attending to business in Alliance this week. Mrs. W. A. Wills, and daughter and two children left this morning for Lead, Deadwood and Spearfish, S D. for a ten days' outing, The finishing touches are being put on the preparations for the county fair Next week The Herald will give dates and other particulars. After attending Normal at, Alliance for several weeks Miss Emma Van Buskirk returned home Friday evening. Hay Springs Enterprise. Ralph Thomas is spending the vaca tion between Junior Normal and the opening of High School at farm work in the vicinity of Marsland. Union services next Sunday evening will be held at the First Presbyterian church. Rev. Godfrey of the United Presbyterian church will preach. The infant baby of Mr. and Mrs. John Dougherty died last Saturday of cholera infantum and the funeral took place at the Catholic cemetery Sunday. Miss Edla Hines, who is visiting Mrs. C. C. Smith, lost a card case containing a twenty dollar bill, but had the good fortune to find it within a few days. The W. C. T. U. will meet next Tuesday with Mrs. W. W. Norton. A full attendance is desired as the annual election of officers will occur at this meeting. Mrs. Emory Abley of Hemingford visited the first of the week at the home of Postmaster and Mrs. I. A. Tash. She was on her return trip from the west. Another gasoline blaze on Tuesday called out the fire department. This time it was at the residence of H. M. Anderson, 307 Toluca avenue. Not much damage was done. Yesterday W. N. Scott of Knoxville, la., terminated a visit with his brother, J. H. Scott, of Cleman. He reported crops in his part of Iowa poor this year on account of excessive rain. Will Broich, son of Henry Broich, with his wife and child spent Sunday in this city. They left Monday noon for Berwyn, where Will assumes the duties of station agent for the Burlington-Mrs. G. E. Alcott of Mitchell, who has been a patient at the Alliance hos pital, has sufficiently recovered so that she has been removed to the residence of Dr. Bowman, where she is conva lescing. Herbert Walters, who takes the place of C F. Brunell as salesman at Miller Bros, stationery store, is rapid ly getting acquainted with the custom ers and fills the position as naturally as an old-timer. A change in the clerical forces at the Alliance National bank and the county clerk's office this week. Miss Sadie Fickle who resigned some time since as assistant cashier at the Alliance Nat. ional is succeeded by Miss Mae Kean, Repair Machine and Miss Kean's former position in the county clerk's office is occupied by her sister, Miss Etta Kean. Carl Wagoner has joined the auto aggregation by purchasing a solid-tire Fuller car. Bud Bctzold sold the ma chine and Carl, who is selling Western Nebraska real estate, found it neces sary to make this purchase. Stanley Civish from nine miles north west of Hemingford and Vencel Stiller from Sioux county, west of Marsland, were two of The Herald's farmer friends who made the office a pleasant call during the latter part of July-, Gordon Moulton met with quite a painful accident Saturday afternoon, getting one of his fingers mashed while setting pins at the Dismer bowling alley. It is, however, getting along nicely now and he" will soon be at his work again. On Monday of this week Mrs. Thos. Allen and two children took their de parture that has been looked forward to with regrets for some time by their many friends. They will visit in South Dakota a lew weeks before join ing Dr. A. in Mexico. T. J. O'Day, editor of the Nehawka Register, is renewing acquaintances in Alliance today. He was one of the early settlers in this county, and at one time worked on the Grand Lake Express. Mr. O'Day is enroute to the land of the setting sun. We go to press with this issue of The Herald on Thursday forenoon in stead of Thursday evening as hereto fore, hence persons who have waited until today to hand in items for publi cation or insert advertisements are probably disappointed. Hans Wiese, accompanied by his wife, came down from his farm near Hemingford last Saturday and called at The Herald office to renew his sub scription. We are always pleased to have our subscribers call and bring their wives with them, too. Ladies from the country are always welcome to stop at The Herald office to rest when they choose to do so. Our f rieud, Charley Huss, is one of the latest victims of the treacherous gasoline. Last Saturday, while a gasoline tank that feeds the coffee urn burner at his cafe was being filled by an assistant, the volatile fluid ignited and started a blaze that for a time threatened to consume the place. Prompt action by those who were near soon extinguished the flame and avoid ed the necessity for calling out the de partment. Tho loss on furniture and building was covered, or partly covered, by insurance. The cafe was closed from Saturday to Tuesday afternoon. For rent. Furnished room, modern.
