Eleven thousand (11,000) saloons woro abolished and put out of busi ness In tho United States. Internal revenue receipts fell off $10,000,000, showing that less Iiitoxi cants woro Bt)ld and dratiilc than In previous years. It has boon demonstrated that tho people arc aroused, and alive to the dangers lurking In tho traffic. Where over they have beon given an oppor tunity to vote on the- saloon fpioHtlon their vordlct has beon almost ln varlbly against tho saloon. This movement Is not onfincd to an particular part of the country. States north and south aro vlolng with each other in their efforts to wlpo out tho blighting effects of tho saloon. Look at these figures compiled from As sociated Press dispatches, awhlch are as rellabl as a market report, and as non-partlzan. Ohio Sixty-two couiiitleB out of 88 iu tho state aro without a saloon, Fifty-seven of theso counties went dry last summer and fall. Tennesee A state wldo prohibi tion law passed in January, 1009, by a two-thirds majority Iiii tho legis lature over the Governor's veto. This grand vectory Is dimmed however by the fact that tho brilliant and 1ralny Senator Carnutck, gave up his life In defense of the toniporanco cause. Indiana county option law passed past September. Every county vot ing under It has gono dry. The legls- ilnture now In session has refused to lopeal It. . Arkansas At tho Kovombor elec tion a majority of 22,934 was cast In ' ftl Wir nf n lln.anlnmi ivr.llmr Iowa Four hundred and sixty one BalooiiB were put out 'of business during th5 year. South Carolina Twenty-two coun ties out of forty-two In the entire stato are dry. Jlichagan Movement Just started, but eleven counties aru aliendy dry. Tho great Gorman state Wisconsin One hundred dry towns and 400 mloons abolished. Minnesota Tho home of the Swede Only 100 saloons left in the state. Kentucky The great fatate where tho trinity, beautiful women, blooded horses and Borbon whiskey have pre vailed. The eKntuckiaui has conclud ed to let tho whiskey go, and as a consequence 95 countes in tho state aie dry. Connecticut 300 saloons forced out of buslnoss. Massachusetts Has a dry city of 200,000 Inhabitants. 215 saloons in other cities abolished. Illinois 1,053 towns went dryln( one and 1,500 saloons closed their doors. Maryland 353 saloons voted out of Baltimore alone. Washington Governor and over whelming majority of leglslatuia choben in November pledged to the enactment of a county option law, Idaho Legislature has just passed a county option law. Texas Legislature elected pledged to the passage of alaw submitting a prohibitory amendment to popular vote, Maine, Kansas, South Dakota, Ala bama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Mis sissippi have btate wide prohibitory laws, and Maini after a trial of thirty years, refuses to change. Florida Only 250 saloons left In entile state. Vlrglnaa Out of 100 counties in tho state, 71 are dry. Nebraska Has 21 dry counties and thirteen more have only one sa loon each, 450 dry towns; 44 county seat towns out of a total of 90 are dry, A year ago the saloon keeper and Ills friends sneered at the anti-saloon movement, as bomothlng of a spor adic nature and mushroon growth, which would quickly pass away, leav ing him to pursue his nefarious busi ness at his own sweet will. Tlioy have chnngod their minds lntely. The man hood of tho nation has been aroused. Tho southerner, ' fiery, volatile and quick to act litis accomplished the mobt In tin name time. The northerner with more sluggish blood, and phleg matic tompermeut, has taken longer to get Into action, but npw that he is aroused his ponderous and deliberate strength will be felt. He is not easily dlccouraged and a temporary defeat will not only cause him to top long ouough to analyze the cause of his re verse, when he will romnne. the fight with a tenacity and bull-dog determln- DR.
