Whistle Creek, was injtown Tuesday.
Mr. Hunsaker, the section foreman, and
family, moved to Marsland Wednesday.
Dollie Pierce is now able to attend
school after a week's wrestle with bad cold.
Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe are nssisting Mr,
Rosenberger in harvesting his potato crop.
Mrs. C. W. Brown has been quite sick
with tousilitis but is much better at this
writing.
Francis Ryan camo down from Lead
Friday to attend the Advent school south
of town,
James Christy, democratic candidate for
commissioner, was soliciting votes here on
Saturday.

Mr. Stapes and dauchter. Pearl, came

Clara Button has been absent from
school the last week on account of the ill
ness of her mother.
Brown Church came up from Ber'ca
Friday and went out to Canton after some
cattle for Ben Johnson,
Alex. Muirhead, republican candidate
for treasurer, went to Alliance Monday to
spend a week or so electioneering.
Johnson Bros, shipped three cars of cattle
and one of horses to Wyman, Iowa. They
intend to return if the weather stays agree
able. Minnie Parker came from King Tuesday
morning and visited with friends Until
Monday when she enrolled at the Advenist
school.
Mrs. B. E. Johnston visited with her
mother, Mrs. McCandless, Wednesday.
Mrs. McCandless has been quite sick with
asthma.
Roscoe Emery, representative of the
Emery Produce Co., of Ottumwa, Iowa,
left Monday, after purchasing several cars
of potatoes.
Mae Enyeart has quit working for N.
Frohnapple to get ready to begin school
next Monday. She will teach the Arm
strong school.
B. U. Shepherd received the sad news
Friday that his mother, who lived in Den
ver, was dying. Mr. Shepherd and wife
left for there the same day.
E. D. Mayhew (the jack of spades), of
Chicago, and Wm. Ewerkamp, represen
tatives of Evers Produce Co., of Quincy,
111., are buying potatoes here at present,
Mr. Condit, who represents the Craig
Burr Mercantile Co., St, Jo., stopped here
Friday to buy potatoes and while here
sold several barrels of apples to merchants
here,,
Mr. Ferguson of St. Paul, Robert Har
vey and N. Frohnapfel were out to the
river the first of the week, hunting ducks,
We hear they got lots of hunting, but no
ducks.
Mrs, Baldwin and neice Nora Stone,
came down from Belmont last week. Mrs.
Baldwin will run a boarding house at the
Advent settlement and Nora will attend
school.
Mr. John Caha and wife came in Satur
day to see Dr. Eikner about a sore in Mrs,
Caha's ear. It has been bothering her for
about two weeks, but is not thought to be
serious.
Wanted. Fifty head of cattle to winter
at the Hatch ranch, 12 miles northwest of
Hemingford ; good range and plenty of

Tuesday was Halloween and quite an
enjoyable time was spent by some of the
young folks around town. No damage was
done, but there was enough mischief to
show that they had a good time.
Mrs. H, R. Green and family arrived
from their eastern trip Thursday. They
were gone about a month, and while awav
visited Mr. Green's old home in Vermont.
They report a very pleasant time.

E. Wiltsey shipped cattle to Omaha Mon
day. Messrs. B. E. Johnson, C. E. Wilt
sey, L. Neeland. E. T. Enyeart and M

The lecture and magic lantern show giv
en by D. W. Patterson Monday night at
the schoolhouse was in all ways a saccess,
it having been much better than expected.
Nineteen dollars was taken in, one-fourth
of which the school receives for the use of
the building. Mr. Patterson went from
here to Bridgeport, where he was to show
Tuesday night.

sister at Red Oak, Iowa.

pois arrived at the home of Ollie Arnold a

Mrs. Ed. Whetstone has so far recover
ed as to be able to go to Alliance, where
she is receiving medical treatment of Dr,
Bowman.
Carpenter Maxwell of Oskosh. is in town
"repairing our breaches. ' Today he was
engaged laying floor in the Stockmen's
Mercantile Co. s store,
Rev. Lyons and family now contemplate
rendering the musical program at Lakeside
on Tuesday evening, Nov. 14, 1905, It
will consist of instrumental solos and duets
trios and quartettes, also male ciuartette
and ladies quartette, Admission will be
by ticket, 25c nnd 15c. Proceeds to be do
voted to repairs on tho parsonage.
In spite of the inclemency of the woath
or Saturday, quite a few of the church of
ficials gathered at the parsonage to attend
to the busiuess of tho first quarterly con
ference. Fresh bcof is beginning to find its way
about our little burg, nnd n full quarter of
the right kind reached tho larder of ye
scribe n few days since and ho is glad In
his heart.
Lakeside is still lingering on tho verge of
darkness. Coal oil for nearly two weeks
enroute from Omaha failed to reach Lake
side. Coal also out from Denver the 18th
inst has not yet arrived. Yo railroad, wo
aro getting cold and sitting in the dark.

tives for six weeks
Messrs Moyer and Wilson of Crawford
were touring the county on Friday looking
up broken connections along the telephone

Mr. Horacher of Wilber, Neb., arrived
on Thursday, and went out to Mrs. Inger.
strom's, where he has taken work indefin
itely. Mrs. Grant and Mrs. Sullcubergcr went
to Hi'mingford on Saturday night, visiting
till Monday nt the homo of Mrs. A. Sher
wood. Mrs. Sallie Richardson arrived from tho
eastern part of the state recently to visit
for a time with her daughters, Mrs. Jack
son and Mrs. Cox.
A daughter arrived at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. C. A. McGoggy on Monday.
Mother and daughter are doing well, and
Mac allows that irrigation has done won
ders for him this season.
Thero was considerable loss of potatoes
resulting from the recent cold snap and
those who lost their spuds are not to be
pitied, with the long beautiful autumn pro
vided by The Controller of the seasons
this work should all have been done.
A sample of Dawes county economy was
displayed at the recent term of court at
Chadron. Attorney A. W. Crltes was em
ployed by the county in a case of supposed
murder, the defendant being an Indian of
Pine Ridge Agency but who was discharg
ed as not guilty. Mr. Critcs put in a claim
of Sioo for attorney's fee, which was cut
in two by the county commissioners. Mr.
Crites sued the county for the remainder
of his fees and the decision was given in
his favor. The suit cast the county $200
we understaud and the full amount claimed
by the plaintiff allowed.
