county, camo very near being killed.
Ho was threshing for N. O. Blner and
was sitting on tho separator with his
feet close to tho fast revolving rod
which operates tho self-feeder. Tho
rod caught his pants legs and began
to pull him Into tho machine With
rare presence of mind Mr. Pickering
rolled over and caught hold of somo
timbers on the machine nnd held with
tenacious grip w.hllo his trousers,
shoes, and stockings wero stripped
from him and hurled through tho
cylinders and into the straw stack.

YORK Every effort has been made
to ascertain the whereabouts ot Mr.
J. E. Donnell, a business man who
departed suddenly from York ten days
ngo. Mr. Donnell Is a member of
several societies, who havo appointed
committees to ascertain his where
abouts, but so far no word has been
received from him nor ani clew as
to his present place of residence. The
last tlmo he was seen was on Satur
day evening at Lihwood.

NEBRASKA NATIONAL GUARD.
Adjutant General Issues Orders for
Reorganization.
LINCOLN Adjutant General Cul
ver has Just Issued orders for reor
ganization of tho Nebraska National
Guard along tho lines laid down by
tho Dick bill and instructions given
in general orders of the regular army.
Tho reorganization will give the guard
sovCral new officers, chief among
them being two majors, one for each
battalion of tho regiment. Hereto
fore each regiment has had but two
majors, ono battalion being command
ed by tho lieutenant colonel. An elec
tion will bo called at once to supply
theso newly created offices.
Besides these tho governor and ad
jutant may appoint a regimental com
missary and quartermaster, each of
whom will rank as captains and re
ceive tho same pay. They will havo
chargo of tho subsistence and ord
nance stores.
Strange Robbery at Grand Island.
GRAND ISLAND. While Miss
Emily Blunk and sister wero at church
and tho other members of the family
were away, someone entered their
residence and took from a pocketbook,
lying on a piano, $20 in bills, leaving
tho silver change in tho book. Noth
ing else was disturbed. Tho residence

ished according to the data of the frost
nud freeze following. Corn Is now look
ing much butter than a fortnight ago artd
the prospects for a crop are correspond
ingly brighter.

Barry Gilbert, a prominent young at
torney of Cedar Rapids, has been ap

fairs of tho Capital National bank
havo been brought to a close, and tho
final dividend will be paid. National
Bank Examiner Griffith, John D. Mac
Farland, Kent K. Hayden and J. W.
McDonald have in turn been success
ively receivers of tho wrecked bank.
Years of litigation have followed the
failure of the bank.
During an electrical sKrm at Oak
land the barn of R Sulir was struck
by lightning. The oolt set Are to the
structure, which was destroyed, to
gether with hay, oats, corn and a 40
set of harness. The horses wero re
moved.
Regent Forrell and Prof. Bur
nett of the Stato university, accom
panied by Land Commissioner McAl
lister of tho Union Pacific, were at
Sidney interviewing the citizens rela
tive to the establishment of a state
experimental farm near that city.

ton, a mall clerk running between Ord
and Grand Island, made an unsuccess
ful attempt at committing suicide at
their homo In Ord. After taking
strychnine she informed her husband
of the fact nnd medical asslstanco
was summoned immediately and after
several hours of treatment she was
considered out ef danger.
Tho contractors who aro to put
down tho now artesian well at Lynch
arrived the first of last week. All
the machinery has been put In place
and the drilling will be commenced at
once.
