Mrs. L. R. Coulter, who has been
quite ill with the grippe, is somewhat
improved.
William A. Johnson haB been suf
fering with a very painful abcoss on
his .arm, which was lanced last Mon
day. He Is improving nicely.
Mr. and Mib. Clifford Robbins are;
receiving congratulations upon the
birth of a little daughter, Sunday,
March 7. Mother and daughter are
doing fine.
A 9%-pound baby hoy was horn to
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Rridgen, Febru
ary 12, at the University hospital.
There will be a big rummage sale at i
the residence of Mrs. Ada Woodson,

local hospital, was buried Monday aft
ernoon.
Mrs. William A. Johnson received a
letter telling of the nerious illness of
her sister, Mrs. Gertrude Rell Handy,
formerly of Omaha, bur now residing
in Chicago. Her many friends will be
glad to know she Is tip and about
again.

his home with a severe cold the last

this week with an attack of acute
bronchitis.

day on official Masonic business.
Drs. C. H. and John A. Singleton,
well-known dental firm, have dissolved
partnership, and will conduct separate
offices.
The Women's Auxiliary of the
Church of St. Philiri the Deacon held
their regular meeting lats Thursday
afternoon at the residence of Mrs.
Charles W. Dickerson, 2812 Ohio.
The hoard of management of the
North Hide Branch of the Y. W. C. A.
held its regular monthly meeting on
Wednesday night and transacted much

Mass Meet Sunday on South Side
Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, a
mass meeting will be held In Bethel
Baptist church, Twenty-ninth and S
streets, South Side, under the auspices
of the Omaha branch of the N. A. A.
C. P. An excellent program of
speeches and music has been arranged
and the public is cordially invited and
urged to attend.

Terry, retired, is stopping temporarily
with Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Spencer, 2K7I
Maple, while closing her affairs before
rejoining her husband in Washington,
D. C.

Omaha Girl Marries in St. Paul.
Miss Beatrice Majors left Monday
night for St. Paul, Minn., where she
was married Tuesday at high noon to
John Winston of that city. They will
reside in St. Paul.

The sendees Sunday at the Epis
copal Church of St. Philip the Deacon
will be as follows: Church school, 10
a. m.; morning prayer and address at
11: evening prayer and sermon by the
Rev. Canon Arthur E. Marsh, at 8.
There will be no celebration of the
holy communion" at 7 in the morning.
This service will be omitted. All other
servires at the usual hour.

Thursday night. A fair crowd of mem
bers was present. Business of im
portance was transacted. They will

N’at Hunter, T. F. Scott, H. J. Kin
ney and P. M. Harris were in attend
ance at the Councilor Deliberation ses
sion here last Sunday. The Council
had a fair representation of officers
present. The session was a pleasant
and successful one.
Mrs. Mnrtle May, 60, passed awai
Saturday morning at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. M. R. Williams, 1030
Rose street. Mrs. May had been ill
for some time when pneumonia set in,
which resulted in death. She is sur
vived by one daughter, Mabel Wil
liams, Uncoln; three sons, John A.,
Hooker T. and Charles A.; three sis
ters. Mrs. Josle Puckett of Chicago,
Mrs. Rlisr. Ashbv, Burlington, la. The
funeral was held in A. M. R. church
Monday at 2:30 p. m. Rev. M. C. Knight
preached. Relatives and friends were
in attendance, nterment in Wyuka.

er of the famous American Giants of
Chicago and president of the National
Negro baseball league, was in this
city this week to work out plans for
placing a league franchise here.

I COLORED CITIZENS RALLY
TO “Y” CAMPAIGN
Little Rock, Ark.—(By the Associ
ated Negro Press) The campaign tor
a “Y” for Little Rock is on and this
entire community is being fired with
enthusi.jsm as Director R. B. De
Frantz leads the march to the goal.
$5,000 has been pledged by Aldridge
E. Bush, Grand Secretary of the Mo
saic Templars, providing the total sub
scribed reaches $25,000. Already
$8,500 has been pledged by the exec
utive committee, Scipio Jones going
in for $1,000, and G. H. Evans of the
Knights of Tabor for $1,000.
The white Y. M. C. A. through J.
Blain Withee, general secretary, and
Dr. J. P. Runyan, president, is lend
ing its encouragement. E. C. Robin
son of Des Moines has accepted the
call as executive secretary.

New Orleans, La.,-—(By the Asso
ciated Negro Press) Dr. D. A. Lines
has resigned as collector of internitl
revenue for this district. Dr. Lines
was a Lily White Republican and at
tempted to force comptroller of the
custom house, Walter Cohen, colored,
from the regular republican party.
Walter Cohen still retains his posi
tion, both in the republican party and
custom house, while Dr. Lines is look
ing for a “job.”
OMAHA BRANCH OF N. A.
A. C. P. HOLDS MEETING
The regular monthly meeting of the
Omaha branch of the N. A. A. C. P.
was held Sunday afternoon at the
North Side “Y,” with the president
presiding. After the transaction of
routine business the branch was fa
vored with an excellent address by
1’rof. George A. Towns of Atlanta uni
versity, vice president of the Atlanta,
branch. He stressed the importance of
membership in the association, which
lias Justified its existence by the work
accomplished. He warned of dangers
ahead of the race and urged enlarged
membership in the organization safe
guarding our rights.

Rail Laying Machine
Does Work of 24 Men
Harrisburg, I'a.—A machine that
lays from 00 to 8(5 steel rslls In an
hour and displaces a railroad gang
of 2(5 men Is at work on the Bethle
hem branch of the Heading railway.
The machine, commercially known i
as the “Burro,” Is mounted on a
standard gauge truck und Is self
propelling to a speed of 10 miles per
hoar. It Is driven by a gasoline en
gine, which also operates the boom
and cables. The crew consists of a
craneman and three laborers.
Other features, except the rail lay
ing, are Identical with the ordinary
hand methods. After the removal of
the worn rail from the track all spike
holes are plugged and new tie plates
applied. The rail Is put into place
and the machine then proceeds over
the rail Just laid to thi next open
Joint on the oppoalte side, after which
the operation Is repeated.
