Mrs. Mnrtle May, 60, passed awai Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. R. Williams, 1030 Rose street. Mrs. May had been ill for some time when pneumonia set in, which resulted in death. She is sur vived by one daughter, Mabel Wil liams, Uncoln; three sons, John A., Hooker T. and Charles A.; three sis ters. Mrs. Josle Puckett of Chicago, Mrs. Rlisr. Ashbv, Burlington, la. B. De Frantz leads the march to the goal. $5,000 has been pledged by Aldridge E. Bush, Grand Secretary of the Mo saic Templars, providing the total sub scribed reaches $25,000. Already $8,500 has been pledged by the exec utive committee, Scipio Jones going in for $1,000, and G. H. Evans of the Knights of Tabor for $1,000. The white Y. M. C. A. through J. Lines has resigned as collector of internitl revenue for this district. Dr. Lines was a Lily White Republican and at tempted to force comptroller of the custom house, Walter Cohen, colored, from the regular republican party. Walter Cohen still retains his posi tion, both in the republican party and custom house, while Dr. Lines is look ing for a “job.” OMAHA BRANCH OF N. A. A. C. P. HOLDS MEETING The regular monthly meeting of the Omaha branch of the N. A. A. C. P. was held Sunday afternoon at the North Side “Y,” with the president presiding. After the transaction of routine business the branch was fa vored with an excellent address by 1’rof. George A. Towns of Atlanta uni versity, vice president of the Atlanta, branch. He stressed the importance of membership in the association, which lias Justified its existence by the work accomplished. He warned of dangers ahead of the race and urged enlarged membership in the organization safe guarding our rights. Rail Laying Machine Does Work of 24 Men Harrisburg, I'a.—A machine that lays from 00 to 8(5 steel rslls In an hour and displaces a railroad gang of 2(5 men Is at work on the Bethle hem branch of the Heading railway. The machine, commercially known i as the “Burro,” Is mounted on a standard gauge truck und Is self propelling to a speed of 10 miles per hoar. It Is driven by a gasoline en gine, which also operates the boom and cables. The crew consists of a craneman and three laborers. Other features, except the rail lay ing, are Identical with the ordinary hand methods. After the removal of the worn rail from the track all spike holes are plugged and new tie plates applied.
