an erratic course today, price changes
being more than ordinarily . confusing.
Some standard Issues were up, while
others were lower; the same condition
applying to numerous specialties. Trad
ing waa dull except during the first and
final hours, when the weakneea of United
Statea rubber nnd St. I'aul created gen
eral unsettlemcnt.
Because of the passing of thi rubber
dividends. Interest centered mainly about
that atock at the opening. Initial sales
consisted of fi.OOO shares at 45 to 46,
against yeterday's close of 51V From
thla level the stock declined to 44t. mak
ing moderate recoverv Inter.
Meantime other stocks, particularly war
specialties, anda few railway Investments
sharea, had manifested a tendency to
break away from ruliber. Improvement
waa well maintained until sudden weak
ness developed In Canadian Pacific which
lots Ita gain of the opening and soon fell
to 142. a fraction above Its low record.
In the last hour the entire list for
feited lta gains on a precipitate decline
In 8t. Paul, which fell 7 to m on
rumors affecting the mnintainance of Its
dividends. Aa the St. Paul earnings are
known to be unsatisfactory credence at
tached to these rumors. Thereafter the
market moved more heavily.
Steel' strength waa ascribed to the
optimistic statements of trade authori
ties which found partial confirmation In
further advances of certain manufactured
materials.
Sudden withdrawals of pressure against
exchange on Parle was tne of th Inter
esting developmenta of the day. Demand
bills on Paris made marked recovery anil

fore been active on the bear aide of the
market. Continued etormy weather In the
narvest regions added materially today to
the danger that the filling of perhaps
the bulk of the July options would have
to he accomplished with old wheat, the
stocks of which are at the lowest ebb
known In years. A further consequence
of the Incessant ralna waa the spread of
belief that an unusual proportion of the
new crop would be of a quality too infer
ior to meet the requirements of specu
lative contracts.
Runhes to cover on the part of July
shorts made September and December
wheat rise In sympathy, but there was
no such urgency regarding the deferred
months aa that which kept Julv aharply
on the upgrade. Old No. 2 hard wheat
In the Chicago sample market sold at
2J4c over July, the highest premium ao
far thin year. Incidentally export advices
were less pesstmiHtlc than of late, and
It wae said the French government had
been buying to some extent.
Corn sympathised with the strength of
wheat. Hesldes, rural offeringa were
limited and there was a fairly good de
mand from the seaboard. Traders In oata
were confronted with signs of a possible
squeeze In the July option, paralleling the
situation as to wheat. Active shipping
call gave cash oatn a decided lift In value.
Provisions sagged owing to lower prices
for hogs. The bearish showing made by
warehouse stocks here tended also to In
duce a decline.

HOOB Hogs have been rolling In very
rapidly thla week, there being 176 treat)
cars lit sight thla morning. For the five
day of the week the total foot up
63,3)18 head, being the largest five daya'
run since the third week In May. It may
tie added that the run aa compared with a
year ago shows a gain of over 18,000 head.
With such large recelpta In sight and
with such liberal supplies all week It la
not surprising that packers were In no
great rush thla morning to fill orders.
Shipper, however, were anxious for beg
and were out In the yards In good sea
son buying very frsely of good to ehutce
light shipping hogs, for auch hogs as
they could use they paid to and In some
case possibly 10a higher than yeaterday.
In other worda thrp paid 87.4W7.66 for
good lighta and on up aa high aa 87.66 for
the cholceat the latter price being the
top for the day and 10c higher than any
thing brought yeaterday. The trade on
hipping grartea waa quit active and the
moat desirable of the reoelptg of that
kind of stuff cluuiged hands In good
season.
Packers wanted their hogs lower and
their bide were gene rat y around 10c or
more under yesterday's; market. It goea
without saying; that sellers did not mske
the conceslon without a fight, so that
the morning wore away with buyers and
seller unable to get together on a trad
ing tais.
A few of the better packing hogs fin
ally sold 60 lower than yesterday, but
the demand for that kind at such prlcea
waa very limited and before many loada
changed hands the price waa fully 10c
lower, at which a few more string
changed hand, but the market dtd not
remain ever there, and before It waa
poaatbl to dispose of the receipts It
had silpped on down to 10yli lower. On
the close there were salea that looked to
be 20o lower. Today's market might be
described as closely reaeinbltng a pair of
stairs, beginning with the second floor
and ending with the basement, every
step carrying the price downward.
Without question It waa the most dif
ficult market experienced at this point
in a lonu time to operate upon aa well
aa deacribe. One thing it would lie well
to understand, and that la that while
'the demand for tight lion on the part
01 ampper was quite gooo tnta morning.

Although Frank Rose, dar clerk at
Hotel Rome, haa been wearing a broader
smile than usual since last Saturday, the
reason for It was a mystery until Colonel
William Anderson, chief clerk, acci
dentally gave away the secret, which had
been confided to him.

a mixture of congratulations upon having
been married and of reproaches for not
telling his friends. Mrs Rose was Mia
Anna Annuschat of Omaha, daughter of
