Now that m surgeon of the United States navy has turned his powerful brain upon the American fat man In an official report. we have an Interesting subject for discussion. He finds that as we present ourselves for enlistment In the sea forces we are all right as to the legs, hut above the waistline we are mus- rularly weak, usually fat and excessively heavy. Even worse than that, we have flat chests, protruding abdomens and a disturbance cf orientation. Roughly speaking, we should say that an American ritlxen whose orientation was disturbed hsd lost his bearings and did not know whether he was afoot or on horseback. Probably no argument Is necessary to prove that such a man. no matter how efficient he might be In other lines, would not be very valuable aa a naval recruit but If his lower extremities were sound he might at least develop a pair of sea-legs which nobody on ship board need despise, ; ' There is reason to believe that the navy surgeon Is not appreciative of his bless ings. Tha men who come to the recruit ing office with an excess of fat above the waist are typical of v prosperous America. They have had three meals a day, with a luncheon or two on the side. All that they need Is a little training, and If a navy cannot give them that of what use la it? BERLIN, April lft A new scheme Is announced for the rebuilding of devas tated districts of East Pruasia. Each of the larger municipalities in the Interior of Germany will become "god-father" to one of the towns or villages which have suffered from Invasion. Thus f harlottenburg has undertaken to raise the necessary assistance for Sol dau, Magdeburg, and JohannlBburg, and so on. The parent towns nre not expected to deal with tho general or temporary relief of distress, but rather with rebuild ing and towav-plannlng. BLOODY TOWER OF LONDON NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC (Correspondence of Associated Press.) LONDON, April . The bloody tower of the Tower of London, where the two "princess of the tower were Imprisoned, has been opened to the public, after be ing used for some years as reitdentkQ quarters for the warders. Many victims of royal caprice have been Immured In this particular build ing and the walls are still covered with their writings, the sole occupation of their long hours of confinement RECOVER FROM BROKEN NECK Girl of Ntae Overeomea Fraetaro of Third and Fifth Ver tebrae. Careful surgery and m wild west show are two important factors that have re sulted In the cure from a broken neck of 9-year-old Marian Raynor Wallace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archer B. Wallace of Church street, Treeport, I I. For the first time since the child re ceived two breaks of the spinal column In the lamina of the third and fifth cer vical vertebrae, at her parents' summer home In Merrick, last July, the child romped and played In the street and attended school yesterday Marian was playing with playmates In the barn' In the rear of the home In Merrick when she felU "Follow the leader" Is sometimes a dangerous game, and when Marian, copying the "leader," tried to climb a swing door, she fell ten feet, landing on her neck and shoulders on a cement floor. Dr. William H, Runcle was summoned. He declared the child's injuries to be serious. She was ordered removed to the Nassau hospital, where an X-ray was to be taken. Promises to take her to the wild west show In Freeport that day Interested her, so that she agreed to remain quiet and submitted happily to being strapped to a board while Dr. Claghorn took the X-ray. While father, motlier and grand father, George Wallace, waited In sus pense, Marian was the cheeriest little patient Imaginable. But she held her head absolutely still and the physicians were able to determine just exactly what the Injury was. The X-ray re vealed that there were two distinct breaks of the vertrabrae of the neck. Scientifically, the fractures were in the lamina of the third and fifth vertebrae, and there was also an apparent forward dislocation of the backbone. Marian was ordered placed In a plaster cakt for two months and it was evident that her hopea for seeing the Wild West show were to be shattered. Bhe was Uld the truth of her Injuries, because it was necessary that she should be ' very quiet. Tha truth did not trouble her. "You must be strapped to the board and taken home again, Marian," said Vr. Runcle. "Yes, and I will be a good girl, too, but If I can stand it, you should take me in the automobile just to sea tha liona and the Indiana I won't want to linger." The party did stop, at the show grounds In the easterly end of Uie vil lage. Several cowboys and Indians learned of the facts and they filed around tha automobile. They gave three cheers for Marian and told her she was a plucky girl It was tha happiest mo ment df her life, despite her pain and condition.
