RUMORS AFLOAT OF INCREASED DIVIDENDS Western Railway aad Metal Share Are Lower on FroBt Takla Moarr Market Coa tlane Ear. NEW VORK, March 11 -Yesterday sud den n'urt ol 7 points in Chesapeake Ohio ltd to a much excited conjecture a to the cuse and wait the stimulating Influ ence in tuday's stork market. Suppositions as to the basis lor the movement er con flicting and various, Yesterday's rumor of an Intended Increase In the dividend to 4 per cent waa a continuing lactor mid gave rise to the general theory of a policy of more liberal dividend disbursements on the part of railroad companies under tha Penn sylvania domination. This reixrt waa sup plemented by a story of a pian to form a new railroad system with an outlet trom the middle west to the Chesapeake at Ohio Atlantic terminus. This story ex tended the speculative excitement Into the middle western Vanderbllt stock, which already have affiliations with the Cincin nati 4k. Ohio. If to the stocks thus af fected Is added the southern group, which was temporarily strong and active, the limits of the active movement In today s market will be generally defined. The rent of the market was comparatively quiet snd was under pressure ot realizing at many Important point. Cincinnati Ohio ltelf was sold to take profits and Its occasional rallies did not carry It at any time to yesterday's high level. New York Central and Pennsylvania shared to the full In the movement In their subsidiary stocks. The Psclflcs, Reading, the Cana dian group, the metal stocks and some others which have been prominent In tho week s speculation were heavy throughout. The profit taking in them affected senti ment and Increased the disposition to real ise toward the lrtst, so that the (losing was decidedly Ir-egutar and with net changes mixed, In spite of a great show of strength during the sedition. The complexion of tho bank statement had been quite accurately foreseen Hnd the small changes in the various Items Indi cated no change from the present eary con dition of the moricv market. ToUl CATTLE There was no particular change in the, cattle market here today, about the usuol Saturday conditions pre vailing. For the week receipts have been a trine heavier than last week, thtj gain amounting to about 3,000 head. As com pared with the corresponding week of last year there Is a gain of about 2,000. head. The market on beef steers has been In very satisfactory condition all the week, tho demand apparently being In excess of the supply. A a result the tendency of prices hhj been upward, with a net gain over the close of lust week amounting to about 15&25C. The improvement has been general on all kinds that would do to kill. As compared with the low time present prices are abput 75c per hundred tilgher. The top price of the week was $5.6ii snd good to choice grades may be titioted from iT.lfi to $5.65. fair to good from 44.50 to $5.15 and the shorter-fed varieties from $140 down. Tho cow market has also been active all the week, with tho tendency ot prices up-1 ward. The gain over the close of last week amounts to about the same as on steers, namely, 15Ci26c, or 75c over the low time. The common kinds have sold to good ad vantage the same as the better grades, but of course the demand has been greatest for tho choicer classes. Good to choice grades of cow and heifer may be quoted from $3.26 to $4.35. fair to good from $2.50 to $3.15 and common to fair from $2 to $2.50. Hulls are also 15(Q.25c higher than they were a week ago. Choice grades may be quoted from $3 to $4.15, with the commoner kinds from $3 down. Veal calves sell up to $6.25 or a little better. The demand for stockers and feeders has also been active this week and with mod ern ta offerings the market has advanced fully 15i25c, which carries prices to the high point of the season to date. Good to choice trraden have sold from 14 to 84.75. 6700 with fair to good from 3.50 to $4. The com- ""! moner Kinds nave not neen as orisk as the choicer loads, but still they have sold a little higher than they did a week ago. They may be quoted from $3.60 down. Twenty-Five Millions Now on the Dumps The jrreatcut gold nilulnjf camp In the worM today Is OoldflMd, Xavada surpasslDK tho early timet In Cripple Creek and the Klondike. Ooldtleld Is one year old -as time la counted by the calendar; but let us reckon front results. ... Within one short year (roltlfleld has produced upwards of three and one-half millions of jrold ore which Is a million more than Cripple Creek yielded the first three years. Some of the ore beds are So rich with virgin gold that claim-holders hare built stockades around their proierty to prevent the ore being carried away by dishonest persons something heretofore unheard of in the history of gold mining. In calculating the possibilities of this Western Kldorado it should be remembered that It Is only within the past thirty daya that the first stamp mill iu Ooldfleld' waa ready to begin operations tho ore having to be treated by the moat primitive processes. It Is conservatively estimated that there are now twenty-five millions worth of ore on the dumps which, with the enormous yield of the vari ous claims, promises a golden harvest for tho year 1005 that will be tho wonder of the world. Those who take an optimistic view of the situation say that Ooldfleld is good for at least A Billion Dollars During the next1 Ave years while some even talk of over-production. But. aside from these seemingly wild statements, conservative men old time miners, who were through the thick of the rush to Cripple Creek and the Klondike claim they never saw such rich "pay dirt" as is 'being dug out of the very streets of Ooldfleld! Three young men from the Middle West landed iu Ooldfleld with less than fifty dollars la cash and no other resources except health and a determination to succeed. Without any knowledge of mining, they took up claims that men of . more experience had passed by as worthless, but which proved to be worth more than a million dollars. . dividend-paying basis within' the (shortest possible space of time, newspapers teem with reports of rich finds. The people are simply impregnated with the desire for gold. A Los Angeles minister, who found himself stranded In Tonopah, delivered lectures to get uioucy enough to reach Ooldfleld. He got there staked out six claims-two of which he sold later for enough to make him independent for life, and his additional properties may bring a million more. ... t It Is estimated that btween thirty and fifty thousand people will go into Ooldfleld within the nextv three months.
