ST. LOUIS. July 11. A terrific storm of
wind, rain and hall prevailed in St Louis
and vicinity for a short time this after
noon, causing considerable damage to
property. One man was killed by light
ning and five others were Injured, but not
seriously hurt, by flying missiles. The
maximum reached by the wind waa sixty
five miles an hour, but this velocity was
sustained for only a minute, or the damage
might have been much greater.
The average velocity was about forty
eight miles an hour. Twelve barges were
blown across the river and eighteen or
twenty houses on Twenty-first street, be
tween Washington and Carr streets, were
completely unroofed, and other damage
was done throughout the city. Some of
the hall stones that fell during the storm
measured an Inch In diameter.
A man named O'Toole waa struck by
lightning near his homf and killed. Wind
truck the steeple of the North Presbyter
Ian church and blew It across the street
Into the front of a grocery store. Sev
eral buildings were unroofed, trees were
uprooted or broken off, heavy plate glass
windows were broken by wind and hall,
and telephone and telegraph wires' were
carried away In various parts of the city.
The wind was so strong that the Jeffer
son guards were ordered to close the doors
to the large World's fair buildings In
order that the wind might not raise the
roofs. Lightning struck the Agricultural
building, but did no serious damage.

celebrated at the World's fair today. There
was a parade from mining gulch to the
Hsll of Congress., where the formal pro
gram was carried out. Addresses were
made by Governor Fcnlmore Chatterton.
Chief Justice J. T. Coin of Wyoming. B. B.
Brooks, president of the Wyoming World's
Fair commission, former Senator II. A.
Coffeen. and Miss Savllla King, of Caspar,
Wyo., sang a solo. A large party of Wy
oming cltliens accompanied Governor Chat
terton and his staff to St. Louis.
The eighth annual convention of the
American Osteopathic association opened
today In the Missouri Stnte pavilion and
will continue for four days. Papers were
read by Clement A. Whiting of California,
and J. B. Llttlejohn of Chicago. Clinics
were conducted by Luclan B. Meeker and
John M. Laughlln of Klrksvllle, Mo. The
sessions were led by C. W. Troctor of Buf
falo, and Ssnford Lyne of Missouri.

graph company, said today that the mes
sage sent by Judge Parker to Mr. Sheehan
at St Louts relative to the platform adop
ted by the democ ratio national committee
was not delayed by" the Western Union
Telegraph company In delivery, .The mes
sage, Mr. Brooks says, was transmitted
from Esopus immediately and delivered
promptly to the address given, and a copy
handed to Mr. Sheehan personally as soon
as he could be found, which was 2:80 p. m.
The Associated Preas can state, however,
that the story of a verification of the dis
patch to correct and that the request for
the same came from St, Louis but from
whom Is not knows.

Creolln aad Leo Planter Meet with
Serious Mishaps.
CHICAGO, July il.-Creolln and Leo
Planter, the well-backed first and second
choice, met with mishaps in the steeple
chase, the feature at Harlem today. Cre
olln was out in front running easily, when
he stumbled at the first fence, throwing
extended by five lengths. Dr. Newlin was
took up the running, but ut the final leap
the former struck iris forefoot and turned
a complete somersault. Jockey Beatlon es
caped injury. Cardigan and Dr. Newlin
war the only real contenders left after
Leo Planter fell. They turned into the
stretch on even terras, but Cardigan easily
drew away when called upon and won tin
