A terrific storm of wind, rain and hall prevailed in St Louis and vicinity for a short time this after noon, causing considerable damage to property. One man was killed by light ning and five others were Injured, but not seriously hurt, by flying missiles. The maximum reached by the wind waa sixty five miles an hour, but this velocity was sustained for only a minute, or the damage might have been much greater. The average velocity was about forty eight miles an hour. Twelve barges were blown across the river and eighteen or twenty houses on Twenty-first street, be tween Washington and Carr streets, were completely unroofed, and other damage was done throughout the city. Some of the hall stones that fell during the storm measured an Inch In diameter. A man named O'Toole waa struck by lightning near his homf and killed. Wind truck the steeple of the North Presbyter Ian church and blew It across the street Into the front of a grocery store. Sev eral buildings were unroofed, trees were uprooted or broken off, heavy plate glass windows were broken by wind and hall, and telephone and telegraph wires' were carried away In various parts of the city. The wind was so strong that the Jeffer son guards were ordered to close the doors to the large World's fair buildings In order that the wind might not raise the roofs.
