New York Man Finally Hseclves
Concession from the
Saltan.
(Copyright, 1904. by Press Publishing Co.)
CONSTANTINOPLE. March 20. (Nw
York World Cablegram-Special Telegram.)
Dr. Banks of New York has received an
unconditional concession from the sultan,
after a long period of tiresome negotiations,
to carry out hla plan of excuvatlona on the
site of the ancient city of Babylonia. On
two other occasions Dr. Bunk was In
formed that hla petition fnr the rifht t
make excavation In that district could not
be granted, but still he persisted in his
efforts.
For several years the German Orient ro
clely has been at work in the region of
Babylonia and Its explorations have
brought to light things of Interest concern
ing the biblical period. In hla early re
fusals to grant concessions to Dr. Banks
the sultan expressed the fear that thera
might be a clash between the German and
Amerlcun explorers that would tend to In
volve Turkey In tha unpleasantness. When
he finally became convinced that ther whs
no danger of a conflict of Interest he agreed
to exte.id the concession to the New
Yorker.
Dr. Banks' concession extends to Bls
mays, which Is near the spot wher the
University of Pennsylvania mad extensive
excavations some years ago and from
which the Institution obtained tablets of
great historical and archeologlcal value).
