CONDITION OFUMAIIYSTRADE' Voiums of Bnsincsffor ths Week Showed Considerable Improvement MANY MERCHANTS ARRIVED IN THE CITY Sharp Advance In Floor Cansed by High Price of Wheat Attracting" Mich Attention Collections Reported Only Fair. Business In nil Hives showed conslder.ibla Improvement last week In Omaha and sur rounding territory, yulte a lew mer chants were in the city and they had a favorable word to say regarding the con dition of trade In the country and the pros- pects fur the future. Their oidms fur spring linen were of such l.beral proportl mi that Jobbers said their business for tha month would now compare very favorably with the eame month of litst ear. or, lit fact, with uny previous year. . With any thing like seasonable weather from this time on wholesalers mid m.inu fiietufers have no fear but what theV will have fully as good a tnnle as anticipated. In some lines jobhets are alieady ttklnjr advance orders for fall goods and ore mak ing big preparations for a larne business later in the year. The healthy condition of the market on all lines, of course, stimulates early buying of Ix.ih sprlnw anil next fall goods, mid for that' reasn 1oi bers expect merchants to arrive in lingo numbers this week, provided the weather Is at all favoraMe. The drv goida trade In particular should be heavy. There have been quite a few market changes during the week under review and, as will be seen from the quotations below, most of them have l-con In the direction of higher prices. Those who are In a pitltlun, to know sny that, whllo ninnv lines mav appear high priced as compared with pre vious years, still merchants who hold back their orders will iern that the market him not yet reached ihe top. The wur c -n-tinties to affect the market on many lues such as flour, rice and tea. Collections are reported only fair. No serious complaints are heard, but ut th same tlrfe there have been times when merchants met their bills with more promptness than they are at the present time. Sharp Advance? In Price of Flonr. One of the most Important changes In the grocery market, and the ono which affec.s more people than any other, la the sharp advance In flour. Since the wheat maik-t started on Its upward course thtre bus been an advance in the price of flour amounting to 11.06 per barrel, or 524 cents per lou pounds. Conslderab.e talk Is heard of bakers advancing the price of bread to. such an extent Unit grocers will huve to sell It for more than 6 cents a loaf. The future of the flour market, of course, de pends upon tho course of wheat. Whole salers say that they are wiling very little flour at these advanced prices, an retailors Instead of buying new supplies are clean ing out everything they have In rtock and In that way taking advantage of tho higher prices. There has been no change In the rugar market so far as refilled grades are con cerned. Raws on tho New York market, however, have advanced nearly 1-16 cent and considerable more activity "is reported. The market Is quoted strong at the ad vance, with prospects favorable for still higher prices. In case of another advauco refined grades would, of course, be ad vanced on this mnrket. The coffee market broke badly early In the week. It was the low grades, however, that were affected, mild coffees being held at full prices. The latter part of the week a reaction took place and bv FrMnv n'ght prices were back to about, where they were at the clo.e of the' previous week. Receipts of Rlos are reporte l as falling off and the general opinion Is that still higher prices will prevail. Owing to the continued cold weather throughout Wisconsin and Michigan, us well as to light rains In the bean-producing section of California, on advance of lo to 15 cents per bushel on that article tiaa gono Into effect. In canned goods the market on both spot and future tomatoes, as well as on spot corn, has stiffened tin considerably during the last few days, and prices hve"been ad vanced both In Indiana and Maryland. Other lines of canned goods remain prac tically the same as they were a week ago. Dried fruits have shown but little change, but apricots snd peaches are monopolizing me nmi oi ine atiention ano notn these lines have scored an advance. Stocks are so closely cleaned up that It looks ns though still hlcher prices would prevail. The rice market Is In n ve'v strong posi tion and an advance of c above the lowest prices Is noted. So far as business k concerned Jobbers say they have no cause for complaint, as trade during the month of February shows a neat gain over the same month of last year. Cotton Market More Healthy. The cotton' market Is now said to be tn a more healthy condition than It hns been at any time during the present crop season. Futures are now closely related to spot cotton, which Indicates that manufacturers ar buylnir the article for both current and future delivery. . The market for cotton goods continues strong, though no quotable changes have taken effect during the period under re view. Jobbers are still advising their friends to place their orders, not only for spring lines.- but for next fall goods as wei. at the prlcor now prevailing. The Improvement In the weather last week helped house trade with local houses verv materially. Rales made by men on the road were also good. This week It Is ex pected that there will be still more buyers in the city end as a result Jobbers are making preparations for, the largest busi ness thev have had so far this year. Many of the leading merchants while placing their orders, for spring lines are also buying liberal stocks of fall specialties such as inderwear, blankets and domets. Rubbers Still Look Cheap. Rubber goods Jobbers report business In their line as being only fair. The weather has been entirely too dry to make such lines as mackintoshes and light rubbers seil to good advantage. Advance orders for fall have also lieen nothing extra, owing no doubt largely to the advance of 6 per cent which bji announced February 1. Jobbers are rother at a loss to understand why merchants healute to place their orders st present prices, as they say an other advance June 1 Is practically certain. Their reason for this Is tho high price and scarcity of the raw material A year ago at this time the raw material was selling mi Brio to o-So per pound, while at the pres ent time It is worth from 3103 to ll.oS per pound From thla it Is seen that the ad vance of 6 per cent on the manufactured nroduct does not Place manufactured goods on a basis with the cost of production and that lit reality manufacturers axe losing "n'speaklng of the hesitancy of mer chants In buying st this time a local Job ber said that the retailer who holds buck In the hope of retting better prices will surely get left When the enormous con sumption of rubber Is taken Into cons dera tion It is not to be wondered at 'hat the Hardware More Active. The demand for hardware showed a 1,1 improvement last week over the prevl ouVweek All kinds of spring goods are now moving out very freely snd a liberal demnnd U anticipated from this time on. Blocks In the country are thought to be rather moderate and In the face of favor-able'lndh-atlons for a big demand It Is ex-r-ected tbet retailers will order very freely. The way the orders are starting in. Jobbers Mv certainly JuatlfleB that belief. The market Is practically the same as It was a week ago, no Important changes having taken place. Values wra to be on a good Arm basis, with no indication of anv big changes for some time to come. That fact should al! make retailers feel free to buy liberally. Frails ad Produce. . There was a better demand for fruits and vegetables last week than bus been experienced In some little time, owing npob-ibly to the more moderate weather. Stocks of fresh vegetables are Increasing each week, but the demand so far has been aufhi-lent to prevent much change In -prtoeH. The quotations ruling on the dlf. f erect lines of both fruits and vegetables w'H be found In another column. The egg market took a big drop last week on account of more liberal receipts. Prices may go somewhat luw.-r, but stilt the general opinion is that unless receipts heroine h""tvler than generally anticipated the mark-t will not go much lower In the near future.
