In temporature, tho thermometer for the
first tlmo In ten years ourlng tho month
of December reaching 63 degrees. The
day was phenomenal In Its spring-time
warmth and men worked in tho open air in
shirt sleeves. In tho homes and offices
furnaces and steam boilers wero closed
down and windows were thrown open.
This tomperaturo Is not unprecedented in
Nebraska in December, nor Is G3 degrees
tho highest point reached by the mercury.
In 1890 tho high record was established,
which, in tho records of the weather
bureau, has novcr been equalled. Decem
ber 10 of that year tho thermometer
reached 71 degrees. December 24, 18S9,
was the warmest Christmas evo In tha his
tory of the bureau, tho thermometer that
day reading 68 degrees. Other warm De
comber days wcro In 1891, with 61 degrees on
tho 20th; 1893, with CO degrees on tho 23d,
and 1891, with 60 degrees on tho last day
of tho yenr. Tho coldest Deccmbor day

of nnuullzlng tho distance from Kansas City
to Denver, which Is slightly In excess of COO
miles. Consequently, tho Missouri River
Denver round trip rato for tnls occasion was
established at J 12.
"If (he executive committee of tho Grand
Army decides against Denver nt Its meeting
to bo held next month railroads operating
between the Missouri river and Denver will
be deprived" of n big revenue that had boon
anticipated when the rnto question was set

harmony among tho rival railroads.
