of tho national forest reservations In tho
west.
Tho dlvlilon of forestry will begin work
In n few weeks In tho Black Hills resenrn
In South Dakota. This requires tho earliest
attention because Its timber supply Is needed
by a largo number of settlors, miners nnd
mill men. Tha extent of thl di-uatid will
bo Investigated nnd plans devised for meet
ing It without exhaustion ot the supply. An
estimate ot standing Umber -will bo nrndn
nnd tho rate of growth will bo studied In
older to provide a satisfactory basis for
predicting tho future yield of the forest.
Henry S. Graves, superintendent of work
ing plans, mid E. M. Griffith, an expert for
ester ot tho division, will begin the work.
After a few weeks Mr. (1 raves will proceed
to make reconnolasanco surveys of several
other westorn reserves, proliably In the fol
lowing order: The Hlg Horn reservo, la
Wyoming; tho Priest River reserve, In
Idaho, and thu Olympic and Mount ltalnler
reserves of Washington.
