BOSTON , Oct. 23. The 'biennial conven-
; lon of the Unlversallst church was opened
hero today after nearly a week of prelimi
nary meetings. Charles L. Hutchlnson ot
Chicago presided nnd the devotional service
was-conducted by Rev. Joseph Crocker Snow
of HavorliKl.
The first business taken up was introduced
by a motion to ratify a new platform of
principles by the acceptance of which the
UnlvcrsallBt body gives up forever the Win
chester confession of faith adopted by it In
1803. The now declaration Is the result of n
conference of Boston Uolvcrsallst ministers
and was drawn , up by the chairman ot their
committee , Rev. George T. Knight of Tufts
college. It was adopted 'by ' the Uiilvcrsallst
body at Its last biennial convention in Chicago
cage , but under the 'by-laws ' had to lie over
two years for ratification. Rev. Henry B.
Metcalf of Pawtuckct , R. L , moved Us rati
fication. The Chicago declaration la as fol
lows :
The essential principles of the Unlvcrsal-
Ist faith aru the universal fatherhood or
God.
God.Tho
The spiritual authority and leadership of
Ills HOD , Jesus Christ.
The trustworthiness oC the bible ns con-
tninlnv u revelation from God.
A certainty of retribution for sin.
The final pcuco and harmony o all souls
with God.
The ratification was voted , 132 In favor ,
10 averse.
The most Important feature of the
proceedings aside from the adoption of the
new articles of faith was the admission of
a delegation headed by Rev. Edward Everett
Halo from the Uultarlan's general body for
conference on the subject of a union of the
two denominations.
Dr. Hale addressed the convention. Ho
said that the leading feature of Unitarian
life ns Dr. Lyman Abbott described it to tlio
speaker was 'tho ' forward look , combined
with the determination to keep foot our
historical relation to the leader of Chris
tianity.
