July liquidation continues to be the fcattirte and the fear of the name Increasing as thn llrst of the month approaches la no tloubt keeping a good many traders out of the market. The lower cables , both IKnKll. h antl continental , especially the latter , show weakness In coarse grains , lack of speculation , absence of any fresh foreign inquiry and fairly good aprlniwheat prospects wore the Inlltipnrrs which were re sponsible for the sentiment developed early In the day. Pork showed more strength than anything Pise , The activity early continued throughout the balance of the session , the market loosening up at both ends. The Chicago Shoe and Leather -Review says that the country hide market Is slowly but surely developing strength. The fact that hide * are scarce In the country Is irradually beln hrouiiht home to everyone In the trade except pt-rhaps , the buyers of leather , who. of course' prefer to make themselves believe that hides al- wayi have been , are now and ever will be In superabundant bupply. W have on oar de-k letters from tannera Informing us that tht-y have male offers for hides In several western townn only to re/wlve replies from the dealtrs that they had no hides to offer. The hide situ ation Is one of Kri-at strength qualified only ti the generally unratlsfactory condition of the llnance and coramfrcn of the nation. The packers an- very closely sold up. There is considerable competition among laree buyers The packers are sending away a peed many hides to be tanneii for their account. florae kinds of leather are scarce in the United States. The English hide and leather markets are stronger. More leather is cut for the fall trade than for the Fprtn ? trade. The worst of the political scare is over. Nothing can possibly happen to make things worse. Jlany thins * may trnd to Improve tie situation. The trade in all branches seems healthy and solvent. No important failures In wholes-ale leather or nhces have hapiwned recently. The consumption of leather la large. The purchasln ; ; power of the people Is imploring. Their uncertainty retards Improvement , notwithstanding the more widely prevalent feeling that the monetary action at the SL Louis conven tion will be sustained by the people. But many mills have waited as long as hey can with safety and signatures have been given by enough cotton mills of Fall River to Insure a temporary stop page , It Is stated , the nature of i-hlch Is now under discussion In conference vlth the Providence manufacturers. Mean- iVhlle the Pacific of Lawrence and the ifaumkeag of Salem have closed for a Ime , and practically all the southern cot- , on mills will bo represented at a meeting on Monday with the same object. Woolen mills arc acting without concert , but fotir- ' , een are mentioned In dispatches as hav- ng closed this week. There Is no simi lar movement In other Industries , though : he period of summer closing is at hnnd n many of them and Important controver sies as to wages of Iron puddlers and other hnnds make It likely that the annual stoppage In that Industry may last longer than usual. The weakness Qf wheat , which has declined 2.10 cents , and of cotton , hich Is He lower for spot , though less or futures , have full explanation in de cidedly gooil crop prospects. Upturns of harvesting thus far support the best estimates as to wheat and the condition Of cotton has been decidedly Improved by rains. The hay crop has .also been ex ceedingly good at thu west. It is not wholly a welcome , but a necessary conclu sion. that prices for the great staples are not likely to be higher. The great com binations which , the Iron Ase wisely rea sons. tend to cause disastrously low prlcei hereafter , still control the markets both for material and finished products of iron rtnd steel , though It Is reported that lower prices will soon be made for coke , owlnp to better utilization of bye-products , am for nails owing to the heavy decrease in consumption. Al most all the cattle In the yards were corn red l * > eves , there beins no butchers' stork or feeders worth mentioning. The quality of the cattle on sale was ifood as a general thlnfr , and among the offerings wore some very toppy cattle. The marxet as retards values was not much changed from yesterday. Good cat tle , or such as the buyers wanted , were strong , while others were slow. The trade as a whole was reasonably active and moat ev rythlntr changed hands early. There was one load of Texas cows which sold at J2.33 and that was about the only full load of cows In the yards. There were a few pieces of loads of native cows , bui not enough to cut any figure on the market. The prices paid were just about the same as yesterday. Only four or live loads of stockers and feeders were in the yards , and as the sutv ply in the hands of speculators had been pretty well exhausted the demand was BOod. The market was strong on any- tiling desirable. Representative sales : BEEF STEETtS. Jfo. Av. Pr. Xo. Av. Pr. Xo. Av. l r. : : < n uo u..mo so n..ir. > o n co 1. . . .
