THE OMAHA DAILY UEE : IttL&AY , JANUA11Y 17 , 1800. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Everything Started Up with a Jump , Pro visions Boltig tlio due. GRAIN MARKETS GRADUALLY RECEDED EBropcnn Putlilcnl Outlook Our of tlie LcnilliiK Kent tire * of the N'rvvK CuitfriillliiK ' TrnilliiK. CHICAGO , Jnn. IG.-Kvcrythlng ntnrlce on the Jump today , Inking the cue from provlflonc , but the high Jinks ended will the first hour of the session. The grali markets cut loose from the lead of pro Visions , for while the latter persisted In holding on to fomo of the advance , wheat corn and oati dropped nil of theirs nm nliout ' , ic nil around besides. Pork closec 17',4o higher , lard 12tio nnd rlln Ific higher \Vhcnt opened active , opening quotations for Mny being nt from COo to COU . ° r a trifle higher than the closing yesterday A rise of from U l to ' ,4 < 1 In Liverpool n the opening was reported , with another nil- vnnuo In the course of the day , bringing it H from Ud to Id , the gain being due to the Improved demand nnd light offerings It was said. The European political out look , Judged from Iho value ot KngllBl consols , was eminently pncltlc. these se curities being up to lOitf , the highest price they were ever ( juoled nt. The Clnclnnnt I'rlce Current nnld that the weather of the past week had been rather trying on tlio wheat plant. 13xpnrt clearances fron the Atlantic xrobonrd were equal In when nnd flour to 4S..000 bu. , but there neemed to lie n good deal of apprehension In rcgnn to the business nnd financial outlook , nm operators were complaining of the dllllculty In untieing loans nt the bunks , whlcl tended to check the speculative Impulse Minneapolis reported that stocks of wheat there had Increased 400,000 bu. in three dttvB nnd would probably show an Increase of'700,000 bu. for the week , nnd this helped the benrl"h feeling which began to de velop. The closing cables showed only aid ' /id gain , but Paris was quoted llrm nt n Bhado higher for lour and wheat no be fore. Merlin ' /J mark higher for near months , ft'A mark higher for the remote. Nev. .ork mes'ages snld that bad reports were being received there of the crop prospects In south Ilus la. and the bulls here had that ridded tn their previous knowledge of jwirtlnlly ruined crops In Anntralla and India nnd a paor crop In Argentine , while the homo prospects nro by no means encouraging. After opening nt 60ic ! for May nnd advancing to COVlc the price worked back In the course of nn hour and a half to C3T4c and COc , nnd from nbout 11 o'clock to within forty-five min utes of the close the trading wna done for the most part nt one or the other of the ° e prices or nt the fpllt between. It rose to fiOltc again on some buying , ( bought to be for foreign account , and closed at DD'Sie. ' Corn opened strong nnd trading was lirlRk for an hour , but following the other markets It became dull nnd an easier feel ing was the predominating feature during the session. May opened 'ftc higher nt 2)c ) , dropped back to 28c nnd held to that until about nn hour from the close , when II slid on another He to 2S > 4c and .showed 10 disposition to get up again. The big es timate caused further reduction and the latest trading wna nt 2Sc , the lowest point of the day's range. In onts n fair general business was done. The market was higher early In sympathy with corn nnd wheat ; declined later for the same reason. The close showed values % o oft from yesterday on May and ' , { 0 on July. May opjncd fractionally higher nt from 20c to w\ic \ , sold to 19 > ic and closed \vlth that price bid. Provisions opened with n boom , which reached Its loudest reverberation nbout thirty minutes from the opening. The hog receipts con tinue email and prices fluctuated rather Wildly. While these early advances were rot maintained to the end , enough of It -was to cend the nhorts homo anxious nnd dispirited. Compared with the average dny's speculative tr.idlng the day's business was Immense. May pork opened nt from $10.1214 to J1020. advanced to $10.40 nnd closed nt J10.17V4. May lard started at J5 SS nnd rose rapidly to $0.0714 , selling oft again to nnd clorlng at i.02' . May ribs opened nt from $5.05 to $5.10. Improved to $5.20 nnd closed at $5.1214 to $5.15. SAN FRANCISCO , Jan. IG.-Tlio steamer Mar'pos.-i arrived from Apia this morning , bringing npns ot tin uprising of the business men of Samoa annlnrt President Schmidt. Iluslness being dull at Samoa , the people , as they do everywhere , criticised the govern ment. The situation had been talked over by several lending merchants , and It being as * certtilncd that 85 per cent ot all municipal and governmental revenues wore being puld out In salaries , meetings \mo held by the prominent business men , where rcsolut'ona v > cro unanimously adopted. The resolutions were to the effect that after years ot trial , the different functions of the president , who rccelvps n compensation from tlie municipal ity of Apia of $5,000 yearly , had proved to bo cither wholly unworthy or he was n failure and burdensome expense upon the commu nity ; that as adviser to the king ho could never be A tniccess. To prove this charge the resolution set forth that the king and government hod found It necessary to peti tion the three treaty powers tor the removal of President Schmidt. Referring ngaln to President Schmidt , the resolution states1 ihnt ns chairman of the municipal eouncll Ma success Is just its re mote. The committee said the S.imoans were quite capable of conducting their own affairs , especially where they have the three consuls as a supervisory board. AB treasurer and custodian of the revenue It was represented that It did not require u man at a salary of $5,000 per annum to ( superintend the running ot n llttlo custom house and oversee a few clerks. There arc plenty of business men In the place , It Is said , who could fill this onico under bond ? , In a far more satisfactory man ner In the regular course of their dally busi ness for a nominal salary. Furthermore , since the ratification ot the Ilerlln treaty , wlllo the foreigners have always compiled with Its regulations and paid their taxes , the Samonns have not done so and no at tempt whatever has been made to collect the Samoan capita tax. Therefore , tli tieaty powers were requested to recall Pres ident Schmidt and allow their representa tives , the three consuls , to take the office. It was then ngroed that communication bo niade to the members of the municipal .coun cil In order to allow them to approve or disapprove of the fore going. This action was taken , but the members refused to meet the pee ple's committee , which aroused such a storm of hostile criticism that four out ot the six members Immediately resigned. However , the council , at a special meeting held shortly afterwards , unanimously approved of the resolution elution of the people , Including the abolition of the office of president and adding a rldor to the effect that the ad valorem duties should be raised from 2 to 10 per cent. Matters then assumed a farcical aspect , but the people were. In earnest and obtained a sudlrlent number of signatures of coun cilors to demand the president to call a special meeting , to receive the resignation and Issue a writ for a now election. Unfor tunately for the people , an error was made In the date for the meeting , as the request wan made for Tuesday , December 23 , when It should have been the 21th. The president's perception was acute enough to detect the error and ho replied , asking what was the date Intended and has in the meantime taken a week's holiday. So the matter stands , but the people are In earnest and even If force Is necessary will make a change In the existing condition of thliics. NEWS rUOM SANDWICH HBI'UIILIC.
