Dally Nebraskan Pago 9 ? Monday, September 10, 1G34 Staunch goal inspires... Continued from Pass 8. After that, the Nebraska de fense slammed the door on the Cowboys and locked it tight. Wyoming coach Al Klncaid said the Blackshirts showed a notice able improvement compared to a year ago. "Nebraska has a much better defense this year, but I dont know if we gave them much of a 'test" Kincaid said. "Right now, we're just not a very good offen sive football team." j Unlike last year, when the Hus f kers held a 42-3 edge at half time, , Wyoming came to Lincoln confi dent about winning. "I really dont know what hap pened " said defensive back Pete BenedettL "We knew going into the game we could play with these guys if we forced some turn overs, and we did that in the first half. We're going, to have to look at the films to see if assignments broke down or what." On the other side of the coin, the Nebraska offense turned in jome strong performances, j Although Osborne, Kincsid and several Wyoming players said the team isn't as "explosive" as last year's "Scoring Explosion," the Hus kers did prove that they could move the ball. I-back Jeff Smith chalked up 170 yards, 113 in the first half despite playing on a rain-slicked slippery surface in which "you could only run straight," Smith said. Fullback Tom Rathman sprinted for 103 yards including a 16-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. When Rathman wasnt running wild, he was clearing the way for Smith. "He sees the hole well," Smith said of Rathman. "He is a great runner and a good blocker too." Smith said the Huskers were able to "control the line of scrim mage. We blew them off the ball and had a lot of good drives." Despite the impressive win and the strong defensive showing, one Husker was a bit disappointed with his personal performance. "I was happy with the way the team played," said center Mark Traynowicz. "The defense played well and the backs ran well, which is what linemen like to see, but I wish I could have stayed on some of my blocks longer." Offensive guard Harry Grlm minger said the linemen were "as much to blame as the backs" for the four turnovers in the first half. "But I'm not upset at all with the way we played," he said. Benedetti said he saw a differ ent Nebraska team this year. "I thought last year as a team they were more explosive, Ben edetti said. "They could score from anywhere. This year they still have that capability, but they're more of a ball control team." When the Associated Press and United Press International polls come out this week, the Huskers may also find themselves in first place. No. 2-ranked Nebraska and No. 3 Clcmson both won big, but No. 1 Miami lost to Michigan, 22 16. UCLA, ranked fourth, also won 18-15 over San Diego State. "It would be kind of nice to hide in the shadows for a while, but if we are, fine," Osborne said about the possible top ranking. Hermann equals NU record in win Julie Hermann recorded 17 kills as Nebraska defeated Iowa in straight sets Saturday at Iowa City, la.
