student legal services to repres

Stall, director of UNL's student

she said.
Faculty S&l2xies...UNL's 1 1 .1
percent faculty salary increase
for 1984-85 has helped the uni
versity compete with faculty sal

Vice Chancellor John Yost. Ac
cording to information he re
ceived, Yost said UNL may sur
pass its goal of reaching a 4.1
percent salary increase over
peer institutions. The last fac

1982-83 of 2.5 percent.
Hall Flood...Although it may
seem a drop in the bucket com

of Nebraska. UNL also had flood

rains. Nebraska Hall and Abel

flooding problems caused by
. sewer system backup.
Computers. ..Control Data
Corporation this summer began
installing two main computers
and 260 computer terminals at
UNL Computing Resource Cen

installed by September, said
Doug Gale, the center's director.
Student use and instruction will
have priority over research on
the new computers, Gale said.
He said he expects all depart
ments to use the computers, not
just the computer science and
engineering departments.
Campus Cfc:mss...Parts of
campus will look different this
fall: the Nebraska Union's South
Crib and some residence halls
will be renovated and improved.
The crib will have new carpet
ing, lighting, furniture and a
tiered ceiling. The crib also will
have new booths and a 6-by-6
stained glass window emblazon
ed with the words "The Crib."
UNL Housing Director Doug
Zatechka said smoke detectors
were installed in every residence
hall room. Smoke dampers were
installed in the hails to comply
with current fire codes. The hous
ing department also installed!
dry chemical fire extinguishers
for use in the case of an electri
cal fire. New high-pressure sod-;
ium lights near the Harper-Schramm-Smith
complex wHl of
fer better security at a lower
cost. Graduate students were
scheduled to have a multi-purpose
kitchen and lounge install
ed in Selleck Quadrangle's grad-
uate section.
State Study...Because it is
the most comprehensive of Neb
raska schools, NU will be the
"single most important part" of
astudy conducted by the Qtizen's
Commission for the Study of;
Higher Education. The study,
which began in June, will con
sider all Nebraska colleges and
universities, including private
institutions. The commission
will present its recommendat
ions to Gov. Bob Kerrey by Christ
mas, said James Olson, commis-.
sion director.
Petrol Houra...The University
Police Department this fall will
extend its patrol hours for resi
dence hall parking lots, accord
ing to a Parking Advisory Com
mittee decision made in July. To
keep unauthorized cars out of
parking lots, UNL police will
patrol Parking Areas 1, 2 and 3
until 11 p.m. weekdays. In the
past, police patrolled the Jots
until 5 p.m. weekdays. UNL pol
ice also will begin patrolling and
ticketing cars parked at the.
meters until noon on Saturdays.
Computer Eoen...The Union
Board discussed July 28 the
possibility of turning the televi-
sion room in the Nebraska Union
lounge into a 24-hour comput
ing room. The change probably
would be tied in with major
redevelopment of the west union
entrance, said Daryl Swanson,
director of Nebraska Union.
Bes!gniiQn...UNL,s assistant
to the dean of students resigned
Aug. 3 to take a job with the
Lincoln Public School system.
Dee Simpson-Kir kland said the
new responsibilities of coordi
nating school discipline will give
her a chance to grow. Simpson
Kirkland was coordinator of
UNL's disciplinary judicial af
fairs and ASUN adviser.
hTCW Director...UNL's Career
Planning and Placement Office
had a "backward" approach, but
Gerry Phaneuf, the office's re
cently hired director, said he
will turn that around. Phaneuf
said he plans to contact fresh
men and begin helping them
make career decisions.
Phaneuf said he also plans to
boost the number of companies
that interview at UNL from
about 300 to 900. The office also
will begin using a new program
that involves bidding for job
interviews with companies re
cruiting at UNL, he said.
UNL secretary de&th...Lan
caster County Judge Gale Pok
orny found enough evidence
after a preliminary hearing to
order a Lincoln man to" stand
trial for the strangulation death
of his wife, a UNL secretary and
student.
Mohammed El-Tabech, 26, is
charged with first-degree mur

commit a felony in connection
with the June 24 death of Lynn
El-Tabech, formerly Lynn Pru
