The following is a review of the sum mer's top news: Legal Services...The NU Board of Regents in May approv ed a proposal that allows UNL student legal services to repres ent students in court. Shelley Stall, director of UNL's student legal services, said one-third of the problems students bring to her office are landlord-tenant problems. Faculty S&l2xies...UNL's 1 1 .1 percent faculty salary increase for 1984-85 has helped the uni versity compete with faculty sal aries at peer institutions, said Vice Chancellor John Yost. Ac cording to information he re ceived, Yost said UNL may sur pass its goal of reaching a 4.1 percent salary increase over peer institutions. The last fac ulty salary increase was the 1982-83 of 2.5 percent. Hall Flood...Although it may seem a drop in the bucket com pared to damage in other parts of Nebraska. UNL also had flood ing problems because of June rains. Nebraska Hall and Abel Hall, both on 17th Street, had flooding problems caused by . sewer system backup. Computers. ..Control Data Corporation this summer began installing two main computers and 260 computer terminals at UNL Computing Resource Cen ter. The computers should be installed by September, said Doug Gale, the center's director. Student use and instruction will have priority over research on the new computers, Gale said. He said he expects all depart ments to use the computers, not just the computer science and engineering departments. Campus Cfc:mss...Parts of campus will look different this fall: the Nebraska Union's South Crib and some residence halls will be renovated and improved. The crib will have new carpet ing, lighting, furniture and a tiered ceiling. The crib also will have new booths and a 6-by-6 stained glass window emblazon ed with the words "The Crib." UNL Housing Director Doug Zatechka said smoke detectors were installed in every residence hall room. Smoke dampers were installed in the hails to comply with current fire codes. The hous ing department also installed! dry chemical fire extinguishers for use in the case of an electri cal fire. New high-pressure sod-; ium lights near the Harper-Schramm-Smith complex wHl of fer better security at a lower cost. Graduate students were scheduled to have a multi-purpose kitchen and lounge install ed in Selleck Quadrangle's grad- uate section. State Study...Because it is the most comprehensive of Neb raska schools, NU will be the "single most important part" of astudy conducted by the Qtizen's Commission for the Study of; Higher Education. The study, which began in June, will con sider all Nebraska colleges and universities, including private institutions. The commission will present its recommendat ions to Gov. Bob Kerrey by Christ mas, said James Olson, commis-. sion director. Petrol Houra...The University Police Department this fall will extend its patrol hours for resi dence hall parking lots, accord ing to a Parking Advisory Com mittee decision made in July. To keep unauthorized cars out of parking lots, UNL police will patrol Parking Areas 1, 2 and 3 until 11 p.m. weekdays. In the past, police patrolled the Jots until 5 p.m. weekdays. UNL pol ice also will begin patrolling and ticketing cars parked at the. meters until noon on Saturdays. Computer Eoen...The Union Board discussed July 28 the possibility of turning the televi- sion room in the Nebraska Union lounge into a 24-hour comput ing room. The change probably would be tied in with major redevelopment of the west union entrance, said Daryl Swanson, director of Nebraska Union. Bes!gniiQn...UNL,s assistant to the dean of students resigned Aug. 3 to take a job with the Lincoln Public School system. Dee Simpson-Kir kland said the new responsibilities of coordi nating school discipline will give her a chance to grow. Simpson Kirkland was coordinator of UNL's disciplinary judicial af fairs and ASUN adviser. hTCW Director...UNL's Career Planning and Placement Office had a "backward" approach, but Gerry Phaneuf, the office's re cently hired director, said he will turn that around. Phaneuf said he plans to contact fresh men and begin helping them make career decisions. Phaneuf said he also plans to boost the number of companies that interview at UNL from about 300 to 900. The office also will begin using a new program that involves bidding for job interviews with companies re cruiting at UNL, he said. UNL secretary de&th...Lan caster County Judge Gale Pok orny found enough evidence after a preliminary hearing to order a Lincoln man to" stand trial for the strangulation death of his wife, a UNL secretary and student. Mohammed El-Tabech, 26, is charged with first-degree mur der and the use of a weapon to commit a felony in connection with the June 24 death of Lynn El-Tabech, formerly Lynn Pru sia.
