Wednesday, August 22, 1934 Daily Nebraskan Page 45 Bananarama record deserves to be ignored By Scott Hsrrah Daily Nebraskan Staff Writer Bananarama is the name of one of Britain's silliest all girl bands. They smashed onto the New Music scene a year or so ago sporting tousled hairstyles, avant garde clo thing, and a cutesy sound. TheyYe as giddy as the Go Gos, campier than Bette Midler and even more fashionable than disco's punky princess, Madonna. Bananarama, Banana ram a's second LP, is the girls' attempt to eradicate the sicken ingly sweet image they por trayed on their previous opus, Deep Sea Skiving. The album starts out impres sively with the hit single, "Cruel Summer." It's a danceable ditty complete with a synthesized beat and lyrics which anyone taking a college summer ses sion can relate to: The city !s crowdedMy friends are away and Vmon my (mm Ws too hot to handleSo I gotta 'get up and goIt 's cruel summerLeaving me here all (o ,.t, I mm Share the R Share the R 51 if' Record Review rWvS ' m cad: . s - ,. Courtesy Poly Gram Records alone" Next comes "Rough Justice," a pretentious song about "child ren starving in the streets." Do these daffy divas really think their empathy for pov erty is plausible when they cavort around in designer duds? The rest of the songs on tiiis side arent worth mentioning The second side blasts our "Hot Line to Heaven," a song that won't win the band any points for sophistication. That's the trouble with this side as well as the first the lyrics are expressive, but the vocals and music are too light hearted to be convincing! The only song that is commensu rate to Bananarama's image is the other single, "Robert De Niro's Waiting," a delight ful teenage fantasy about the star of "Taxi Driver." Siobhan, Keren and Sarah, Bananarama's three voca lists, are gorgeous fashion plates that can sing, but that doesn't make them the serious artists they want us to think they are. Freaky hairdos, lip stick and giggles don't mean good music. It sounds as if the banana in Bananarama is less fruit than peel. " 1 ' 1 " p 1 " 1 1 L-t"JI'' 2' ' ' ' "3 '.".'-!!.' '.' V . '!!.
