Nebraska's basketball
five
edged a hard-fighting Washington
University squad 48-45 at the col
iseum Tuesday night.
Sharp eyes at the free throw
line gave the Huskers their well
earned victory as both teams
scored 15 buckets. Harry Good's
charges dunked 18 of 26 free
throws while Washington U.
scored 15 of 30 in a game marred
by 51 fouls.
From the time Bus Whitehead
was fouled after the game was j
only ten seconds old to Claude
Retherford's final charitv toss in I
the waning seconds, the game was
a scrap.
The Huskers held the Bears to
one point in the first ten minutes
until Jack Barker broke through
Nebraska's defense to pot two
points. .
Dave Pearce combined with
Barker and Bob Light to tie the
game at 11-all with Light's free
throw making the margin. Johnny
Palchelf's long shot from center
court put the Bears ahead but a
free throw by Retherford and a
Kenny Anderson basket put the
Huskers in the lead J4-13.
The lead was shuffled back and
forth in the last ten minutes of
the first half Jack Barker's free
throw tieinc the came at 18-all
and Richard Pearce putting the
Bears into a 19-18 lead at hall
time. Bus Whitehead opened the scor
ing in the final period of play
scoring on a rebound to put the
Huskers in the lead once more
but John Palcheif countered with
another long shot to shift the
lead to the Bears.
Bob Cerv. then evened the count
with a charity. Rod Cox was
fouled by Palcheff and the Lin
coln forward sent the Scarlet into
the lead.
This was with two minutes gone
in the second half and the Husk
ers were on top for good.
Midway through the final
period Nebraska had built up a
42-30 lead but the Washington U.

smart styling and honest value makes sense to college men.
