TALK ON RURAL 'EDUCATION
Atithorities Tell What Is
Wrong With Little Red
Schoolhoyse.
A governor, an editor and two
federal educational authorities told
the National Education association
what is wrong with the little red
schoolhouse and some of the ways
to correct it, at the national con
vention held in Los Angeles last
week.
Governor Dern of Utah said edu
cation "must play an Important
part in the development of agricul
tural marketing and fathom a
more equitable way in the division
of school monyes."
Consolidated schools, said Clar
ence' Poe, editor of a Raleigh, N.
C, magazine, must be kept in the
country and not verge on city
limits. He said he believed the
"school of tomorrow" will be the
"little capital of a community re
public" with rural districts de
fining their own boundaries and
"integrating themselves about the
schools as centers of life.'.' .
Tetter . qualified teachers and
more adequate supervision are
needed," Agnes Samuelson, Des
Momes, la., educator, suggested.
A rural school supervisor for
every state was advocated by
Ohloe C. Baldridge, Lincoln, direc
tor of rural education fOT the state
of Nebraska.

AHEAD FOR TEACHERS

ing the same period of time last
year. Salaries in Nebraska re
less than those of a year ago, ac
cording to the report, and a larger
proportion qf, students who ait
preparing q . teach . probably will
not obtain positions this year.
The study of the teaching situa
tion as made by Director Batson
was based upon the following ques-
t1finfit
What percent of the people en
rolled in your bureau have re
ceived appointments up to June
1?
How does this rompare with
the percent of appointments at
the same date last year?
What is the status of the sal
aries paid this year s compared
with a year ago?
Do you anticipate that there
will be a larger proportion of
your students who are. preparing
to teach that will not obtain po
sitions this year as compared to
