Football Coaches.
MAY SCRIMMAGE WITH
FRESHMAN TEAM TODAY
Hard work to develop a more con
sistent defense was the keynote of
Varsity football practice Tuesday
Bight
Scrimmage with the reserves was
the program. The second tesm was
given the ball for most of the prac
tice but failed to make any great
gains through the Varsity line.
During a short period when the
Varsity was on offense, Al Blood
good, regular quarterback, ran
through the whole reserve team 70
yards to a touchdown.
Another thing stressed in practice
was goal kicking. Last Saturday
against Colgate the Varsity made
five touchdowns but only one goal
was kicked. These extra points prove
Taluable at times, and the coaches
wish to take no more chances on
missing more of them. A. Mandery
Football Games Last Week Were
Full of Thrills and Sensations
Football fans who thronged the
stadiums and football fields last Sat
urday saw some of the greatest per
formances that they will have an op
portunity to witness this season.
Gamus all over the country were
closely contested or filled with action
and thrills every minute of pay.
The most spectacular game played
last Saturday was undouVedly the
Illini-Michigan fray in w'lch Illinois
triumphed over the Yost team 84 to
14, firmly establishing herself as one
of the strongest teams In the tilg
Ten conference. The great "Red"
Thanksgiving Day tilt, did not do so
well in their game with Southern
California, losing the game 17 to 8.
However, the true strength of the Ag
gies cannot be judged at this time,
as the U. S. C. game was their first
collegiate game this season. ' They
nlay the University of Washington
next Saturday. Results of other
games on the coast were: Stanford,
2 ; Oregon U, 13; California U; 9;
Olympia club, 8; Washington U; 52;
Montana, 7.

The Nebraska-Colgate game at Lin.
coin must have been hardly less
thrilling to the Nebraska crowd than
the Illinois game. Sensational runs
by Collins and Rhodes completely
outclassed the Easterners and Ne
braska came away with a 33 to 7
victory. It was the first time that a
East, Yale and Dartmouth
played to a 14 to 14 te. the Yale
eleven holding the Dartmouth team
on the three yard line after the score
had been tied in the last quarter.
Princeton barely won from Navy by

Dean Cutter explained that the
French had failed In their attempt to
luild the Panama canal because they
had been unable to control malari
and yellow fever. The United States
first cleaned up the
Canal Zone and then had little trou
ble with the work. In fact the death
rate was no higher than in any of the
northern cities.
"Fifty years ago two-thirds of
those who underwent major opera
tions died from blood poisoning. To
day, thanks to the work of Pasteur
and Lister, operations are compara
tively safe," stated Dean Cutter.
He told how Pasteur had exploded
the old theory of spontaneous gener
ation and had proved that infections
were produced by microbes. Joseph
Lister, a surgeon in a Glasgow hos
pital, discovered the use of antisep
tics in the prevention of infections.
The very recent work in the treat
ment of diabetes was also discussed
by the speaker. Up to three years
ago diabetes was considered fatal.
The discovery of a counteracting sub
stance by workers at McGiU Unive.
sity has changed the outlook for the
diabetie patient however.
