Council Discuss Sewer Work on Chicago Avenue Near Completion Causes Moves to Try and Extend Sewer on West Side to Protect Pavement. From Wednesday" Dall The city council Avith Mayor George Lushinsky present set a record for swift and efficient work Inst evening when the regular ses sion occupied some thirty-five min utes. The meeting started promptly at 7:30 with all of the councilmen cn hand with the exception of Webb of the first ward who arrived later. Mayor Lushinsky for the board of health stated that there were many cases of flu and colds over the city but nothing of a contagious matter reported by the local physicians. Police Judge C. L. Graves reported for the week of December 14, one arrest and fines and costs of $9.25, while for the week of December 21st there had been three arrests and fines and costs of $49.75. Chairman Vroman cf the lighting committee reported that all of the city lights were reported in service. Mayor Lushinsky discussed at some length the Chicago avenue sewer project and which at this time has 109 men employed. The sewer is now practically completed with only twen ty feet to bring the sewer to the end on south Chicago avenue and where it will be joined to the old rock sewer that crosses the avenue. There is still some work on the top of the I new sewer and fills to be made alon the line of the completed sewer. Deo. 20-30 High t to Limit Humed 1 metit of highways had not given yery favorable reply on the matter of co operation with the city in extending the sewer south on the west side of the highway when the present sewer is completed. The state had desired that the city waive all liability on the part of the state and assume all of the risk of the construction and the crossing of the avenue without stopping of traffic. In regard to the resurfacing of the Granite street viaduct. Mayor Lushinsky stated that the state had not been able to help on thfe work which is located on highway No. 34. but later when working in this sec tion might be able to give some aid on the resurfacing. Councilman Gabelmait, chairman of the streets, alleys and bridgas committee reported that the street force was working only a part of the time but would be out to help clean crossings during the heavy snow period. It was suggested that in the event that the Chicago avenue sewer was not extended further that a part of the material might be used on start ing an extension on Washington ave nue. The store is operated by the American Community Stores. He says that he was permanently dis abled on the 19th day of Febiuary, 1938, slipping on a loose lettuce leaf lying on the floor while he was carrying a heavy crate of goods. He says he was getting $37.50 a week, and is entitled to $15 a week com pensation. ; The company denied that he was injured in the course of his employment.
