On Christmas day Mr. and Mrs. Chester Wall and sons. Mason and Donald and Mr. and Mrs. Max Bow man and family are to be at Union where they will be the guests for the day of Mr. and Mrs. Doran Bowman. Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Petersen and daughter, Miss Mary, with Mrs. Sophia Mayfield are to enjoy the Christmas day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Newton Sullivan and fam ily. Sheriff and Mrs. Joe Mrasek are having a family party on Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Kelley, Jr., Miss Betty Vallery. Donald, Rob ert. Howard and Miss Margaret Mrasek as participants. At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed ward Donat, Sr., will be a large family group, Mr. and Mrs. Hamil ton Mark and daughter, Rosalind, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Hendricks, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Donat and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Donat, Jr., and son, of Omaha. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mullen will , entertain Sunday and Christmas their cousins, Mrs. Kate Casey and Miss Rose Knobe, of Omaha. Celebrating the Christmas day at the home of Joseph F. Hadraba will be Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wooster of Denver, and son, Raymond of Lin coln, with Frances and Edward Had raba of this city. Bennett, at Shenandoah, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ofe and son, Carl, Jr., will spend the Christmas holiday at Madison, Nebraska, with the relatives of Mrs. Ofe. Mr. and Mrs. George Conis are to have as a guest, their cousin, Chris Pappas, of Council Bluffs. Mr. and Mrs. George WT. Charles Grass man Dies at His Home in Alliance 111 for Several Years, Former Resi dent Here Succumbs to At- tack of Pneumonia. From Friday's Daily Thursday evening at the family home at Alliance, Nebraska, Charles Grassman, 73, a former resident of Plattsmouth, passed away as the re sult of an attack of pneumonia from which he has suffered for several days. He however had been in poor health for several years and was an invalid the greater part of the time. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Grassman and was born on the farm southwest of this city in the vicinity of Mynard and where he spent his youthful days. Later Mr. Grassman locatvd in Plattsmouth and was employed in the Burlington shops Tor a number of years. Mr. Grassman was married here to Miss Blanch Batten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Batten, who with seven children survive his passing. The children are Mrs. Janet Peter sen, Lakeside; Mrs. Mable Rockey, Alliance: Wade Grassman, Edge mont. South Dakota; Mrs. Frances Tinsley, Laramie, Wyoming; Dixon Grassman. Lincoln; Mrs. Emeline Cheyne, and Miss Shirley Grassman, Alliance. There is also surviving one sister, Mrs. W. H. Mann of this city and one brother, Mike Grassman. There are many old friends here who will regret to learn of the pass ing of Mr. Grassman and share with the family the sorrow that his death has brought. This morning Mr. and Mrs. John Wehrbein fead Mrs. Fred Kaffenber ger departed for Alliance to attend the funeral services and this after noon Mr. and Mrs. Harry White and family left for the funeral. The ladies are sisters of Mrs. Grassman. TO ATTEND GOLDEN WEDDING Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Rosencrans are leaving Sunday for Hunnewell, Mis souri, for the Christmas holiday and also to attend the golden wedding observance of Mr. and Mrs. M. T. Lasley, parents of Mrs. Rosencrans. Mr. and Mrs. Lasley both are mem bers of families that came to Mis souri from the south in the early history of the state and have resided in that section of Missouri since. Mr. and Mrs. Lasley made their home on a farm near Hunnewell for some fcrty-nine years but the last year moved into town to reside and where they will observe the anniversary with the members of their family. DISMISS TRAFFIC CHARGE From Thursday"! Daily Chester Keil, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Keil of this city, was involved in an automobile accident last night with a car driven by Charles Weir of Omaha. Chester, aged 20 was held in Omaha, unable to put up bond. At a court hearing today the accident wap called a civil matter and Keil was dismissed. Joanne Weir, 9, riding with her father, was injured slightly. A traffic light signal was damaged. SHOWS FINE IMPROVEMENT Mrs. Herman Graham, who was at the St. Catherine's hospital at Oma ha, recovering from a tonsilectomf , has returned to this city and is at the home of her sister, . Mrs. Orval Kintz, until able to go to the farm home. The many friends will De pleased to learn that she is doing so well. UNDERGOES T0NSILECT0MY Jerry, four and a half year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dooley, is recovering in fine shape from a tonsilectomy. The little one was operated on at the office of a local physician. HERE FOR VACATION Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cloidt motor ed to Union Thursday evening to meet their daughter, Maxine, who was coming home from McCook, where she is teaching. PLEASANT HOLIDAY FEATURE One of the attractive features cf the holiday season in the downtown district is that of the cedar tree on the court house lawn. This tree has been arrayed in colored lights as the season compliments of the Iowa-Nebraska Light & Power Co., and at night is a very beautiful sight and adding to the general Christmas like atmosphere. West Point Accepts Rating Appointee Evers Local Young Man Named to United States Military Academy Has Records Approved. William E. Evers, University of Nebraska student and son of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Evers, who has re cently been nominated to a cadetship at the U. S. military academy at West Point, received very pleasant news Wednesday. The local young man was notified that the military board at West Point passing on the rating of the newly appointed cadets, had approved his scholastic and academic records from the University of Nebraska and the Plattsmouth public schools and accepted these as regarding the men tal tests for admission to the academy. This is very pleasing as it will, not make necessary a trip to the academy for the tests. The physical examination will be given at Fort Omaha on March 5th and make the way clear for the ad mission of the local young man to one of the greatest military schools in the world. SCHOOL HAS PROGRAM From Thursday' Dally This afternoon the high school held their regular alumni day program iu honor of the graduates of the school now home from colleges and uni versities, the event being staged in the auditorium of the school build ing. The universities and. colleges closed on Wednesday and the boys and girls who have been in attendance were able to be home today and enjoy th3 fine program arranged by the stu dents of the high school at this time. It had been planned to have a school and alumni dancing party ci Friday evening, but owing to the fact that severe colds are keeping many from school it was decided to have this postponed. LICENSE PLATES READY The new 1940 motor vehicle li cense plates are now available at the office of County Treasurer John E. Turner and a number have Becured the handsome new plates since they were placed on sale Wednesday. The new plates have a background of Persian blue and the lettering and numerals on the face are in Chinese red coloring. The plates also have a facsimile of the state capitol building and the lettering of Nebras ka beneath to make a very showy and easily recognized plate. PETER EVERS RETURNS Mr. and Mrs-. William F. Evers mo tored to Omaha Thursday and Peter Evers. father of Mr. Evers, accom panied them back tj Plattsmouth Mr. Evers has been in the Methodist hosnital for approximately three weeks and his condition was such that he was able to return to hi? home. He is at his son's home on Washington avenue. STATIONED AT GULF PORT Friends of Oliver Taylor, local boy who is In the U. S. navy, will be in terested in learning that he is now stationed at Galveston, Texas, on the U. S. S. destroyer Ellett. "Honk was for several months at the Brook lyn navy base but has recently been Bent to the gulf for service. RETURNS HOME Miss Helen Toman has returned home for the Christmas holidays after spending three weeks at the Clark- son hospital for a major operation. Platters Bow to Tech Wednesday Score 51 to 23 Superior Passing and Fast Ereaks Give Visitors Advantage Locals Suffer From Illness. The Platters Wednesday evening at the local court were turned back for the seiond time this season by the Maroons of Omaha Tech by the score of 51 to 23, the contest being one in which the visitors were never headed from the start. The locals suffered also from the loss of Joe Noble, center, who was at home suffering from flu and un able to take part in the game, this forcing Ed Smith, captain, to the center post. The Technical team had a smooth running, fast breaking group and in their swift and accurate passing held a decided edge through the game. Kamp, Brown, Levine and Thomp son were the chief scorers of the visitors and in their fast plays broke through repeatedly to dump the ball into the baskets. Kamp was finally forced from the game by the foul route. Donald Martin was the chief point getter of the blue and white as he annexed four field goals to make ight points for the Platters. Smita and York each accounted for two oals and Yelick one. Corbin Davis showed the most brilliantly for the Platters in his field play as his defensive work it the guard post was among the best of either team and York also was ooking good in the defense against the fast moving Maroons. Teerr"led 9 to 3 at the first quar- er and stretched this to 22 to 10 atthe half time and 36 to 14 at the third period. In the curtain raiser of the eve ning the Tech seconds won by the score or 42 to lt. Mrs. Fornoff had been attending to some work in the yard and on returning to the house fell and inflicted the fracture. The injured lady was taken to the office of Dr. L. S. Pucelik where the injured member was set. TO ENJOY HOLIDAY Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jacobs and sons, John and George and daugh ter, Shirley, are leaving Sunday eve ning for a holiday visit at Clay Cen ter with the members of the family of Mr. Jacobs. The occasion will be a family reunion, It being the first time in a number of years that all cf the family have been together. The restaurant here will be closed Christ mas day at 9 a. m. for the remainder of the day. COACH HOFFMAN TO ASHLAND Coach Blon Hoffman departed Thursday evening for Ashland and where he will spend the Christmas holidays with his parents and old friends. The coach is expecting: to keep in training with a mil run and hitting the old wood pile to be ready to start in on the basketball squad at the end of the vacation.
