YALES GREAT CAPTAIN
Ted Coy the Football Star and His
Work on the Gridiron
Even one with little knowledge cf
football has but to witness the Yal
team at work to realize that in Ted
Coy the college has a wonderful play
er This tact was brought out two
seasons ago and this year his work on
the gridiron is proving as brilliant a
ever As a line smasher and punter
he stands aloue and his sensational
plays have astonished eveu the mcis
on his own team
Ted Coy is a native of Connecticut
and since he was a youngster has
TED COY YALES GHEAT STAB
played and studied the game He w
strong physically and is built ou
massive outlines His shoulders are
broad and large boned His chest is
deep and tLe muscular development
of the torso is superior to that of the
average man of his age and height
Add to this a pair of legs which seem
to be without limit as to power and
energy and which must be fed by boil
ers intended for an engine of forty
horsepower and an idea may be ob
tained of the amount of resistance
which is needed to combat him ou the
football held
In a Harvaid game once Coy was
held by sheer force of u umbers and
could not move an inch farther but
he was not downed not a bit of it
He stood upright the center of all of
the group The ball was still in his
hand and the referee had blown his
whistle to announce that it was a
fresh down but Coy was standing up
They had been unable to throw him to
the earth
Last season Coy made ten touch
downs for Yale and there are sonn
who believe that if he had been al
lowed to run once more iu the Har
vard game when he was close to the
goal Yale would have scored a touch
down The Crimson was watching him
In every play however and almost
all of the Harvard defense was de
voted to stopping Csy

Truth In Jest
According to historical tradition the
conquest of Finland was foretold in
jest that soon became earuest by its
conqueror Peter the Creat to his jest
er Balakireff
Balakireff had vexed the czar by too
impudent a joke and had been summa
rily banished with the menacing in
junction never to appear on Bussian
soil again He disappeared discreetly
but one day uot long after ieter glanc
ing out of a window saw his unmis
takable figure and quizzical counte
nance jogging comfortably by perch
ed in a country cart Impulsively he
ran down to him and demanded to
know why he had disobeyed
I havent disobeyed you was the
answer I am not ou Bussian soil
now
Not on Bussian soil
No This cart load of earth that
Im sitting ou is Swedish soil I dug it
in Finland only the other day
Peter laughed but he said If Fin
land be Swedish soil now it shall be
Bussian soil betore long And he
made good his words
His Examination Concluded
In the evidence before a parliamen
tary committee concerning the opposi
tion to a railway Hodge scored a point
which accentuates a certaiu legal fic
tion with reference to skilled wit
nesses
A Scotch farmer was giving his tes
timony in favor of the bill
Is it true said the wily K C in
his most searching style that you
sir said to Mr Guild that ou were
willing to give your evidence on the
other side if they would pay you bet
ter
Aye said the pawky farmer and
after a pause let me jist pit the
same question to ye if ye had been
offered a bigger fee wad ye no hae
been ou thither side yerselV
It is needless to say that the K C
did uot cross question the witness fur

Pipes Frozen by Warm Spells
It is a curious fact that water pipes
under grouud will often freeze during
the warm spell that follows a cold
snap The explanation made for this
interesting phenomenon is that after a
cold wave a large quantity of heat is
takeu from the grouud in the work of
changing the frozen moisture into wa
ter and thus on the principle of the
ice cream freezer the pipe is chilled
enough heat being taken from it to
freeze it
Cause For Thanks
Alas sighed the tramp dramatical
ly No matter where 1 turns theres
a hand raised against me
Which shows you ought to be
thankful fer oue thiug said the
farmer
