Why He Didnt Smile
A certain well known humorist re
cently attended a banquet at which
he was seated beside a man who seem
ed to have almost a mania for story
telling He began with the oysters
and had at least one story for each
course clear down to the Roquefort
The humorist listened in patience but
did not smile or make any comment
Finally the story teller noticed the
fact that he was not eliciting any ex
pressions of mirth and being one who
was not at all afflicted with diffidence
he asked
Say old man whats the matter
with my stories anyhow You havent
cracked a smile over any of them
If I havent seemed to appreciate
your stories you will have to blame
my modesty
Your modesty Theres nothing
about any of the stories Ive told that
ought to interfere with anybodys mod
esty At least I supposed they were
clean If theres a double meaning In
any of them please tell me
Theres nothing at all the matter
with them Theyre good clean sto
ries Nevertheless my modesty forbids
me to laugh at them I wrote them

Names and Their Meaning
Nero and His Voice
In an interesting paper M Moure
and M Bouyer relate the extraordinary
care which the Emperor Nero took of
his voice At night Nero lay on his
back with a thin plate of lead on his
stomach He abstained from fruits
and all dishes which could hurt his
voice In order not to damage the
purity of its sound he ceased haran
guing the soldiers and the senate He
attached to his service an officer spe
cially deputed to take care of his voice
He talked only in the presence of this
singular official who warned him when
he spoke too loudly or forced his voice
and if the emperor carried away by
some sudden fit of passion did not lis
ten to his remonstrances it was his
duty to stop his mouth with a napkin

Bananas
Bananas says an authority are
by millions of people eaten green or
ripe raw or cooked are served in all
ways in which apples grains and po
tatoes are used and are palatable
healthful and nutritious In every way
in which they are prepared They
make excellent bread cakes and pies
puddings confectionery and coffee sub
stitutes yield brandy beer vinegar
sugar oil and fibers They are bought
as a luxury by millions who may use
them as a staple food Yet they may
be grown profitably in a small area
only Therefore banana culture affords
a perfectly safe and gainful use of
time and money
