Land Office Ruling
Nokth Platte Neb Juno 16 A
new ruling of the land department has
been made in tho Kinkaid homestead
law that knocks out a good many fel
lows who tried to be smart and get
ahead of every body else soon after tho
law was first enacted The law grant
ing section homesteads passed in con
gress April 28 1901 and took effect six
ty days thereafter Before any entries
could bo made under such act many
persons filed quarter section homesteads
under tho old law and located their
claims in strings of four forty acre tracts
in tho center of the section desired for
tho purpose of keeping others out of
such sectiqD and after entries were
open under tho Kinkaid act they applied
for and were permitted by the local of
ficers to make another entry embracing
the balance of tho section The com
missioner of the genenil land office now
holds that such second entries are void
and these people find themselves with
onlv 160 acres instead of 610
