has been made in tho Kinkaid homestead law that knocks out a good many fel lows who tried to be smart and get ahead of every body else soon after tho law was first enacted The law grant ing section homesteads passed in con gress April 28 1901 and took effect six ty days thereafter Before any entries could bo made under such act many persons filed quarter section homesteads under tho old law and located their claims in strings of four forty acre tracts in tho center of the section desired for tho purpose of keeping others out of such sectiqD and after entries were open under tho Kinkaid act they applied for and were permitted by the local of ficers to make another entry embracing the balance of tho section The com missioner of the genenil land office now holds that such second entries managers on Juno 10th President Mellor notified the board that ho had appointed S C Bassott secretary to fill tho vacancy oc casioned by tho death of Hon Robert W Furnas also that W O Caley of Croighton Knox connty had been ap pointed a member of the state board to fill vacancy Contracts have been signed for exhi bition races during the fair with the owner of the Guidless Wonder Cute a
