out of the local knights there were pres ent from outsido the city Sir Knights Xi II Blackledge A Galusba J F Amick T A Wilburn W C Cox and Jones of Red Cloud John Johnson and J M Adams of Wilsonville After the conferring of the degree the knights and guests indulged in an oyster supper in Stephens restaurant having the delicious bivalves served in every style with trimmings to match The visiting knights were entertained in tho afternoon by the local knights among other things a trip was mndo to the famous Shadeland stock farm where Mr Rogers handsome white faces were inspected and declared among the finest in the west Instructive Entertaining Lecture Tho story of Alaskas history people and vast resources as told and illustrat ed by steriopticon in the Congregational -church Monday evening by George Xiowis TJosford of Valdez Alaska was decidedly interesting and entertaining The gentleman is eloquent and inform ed by actual residence in that country He has a host of rare and beautiful colored views of tho wondorous land of the midnight sun lie is enthusiastic over its possibilities and marvelous -scenery and he tells the story well in word and picture The church was well filled and tho lecture was greatly ap preciated and enjoyed The lecture was given under auspices of tho ladies of the church who realized a comfortable sum therefrom Third in a Little Over a Year Cora Reed sister of Mrs George Le Hew of our city died cf pneumonia in Pueblo Colorado last Saturday This Is the third death in the Reed family within a little over a year and two of tho younger children are not well at this time The deceased was here about a month since when her mother died and was a picture of perfect robust health She was but 17 years of age and the main stay and pride of the family Mrs Lellew was there but on account of her health returned immediately after the -funeral The father and older children ire quite distracted over these multiplied fatalities They have deepest sympathy here To Complete the Organization The members of the Roosevelt club will meet in H H Berrys office to morrow Saturday evening at eight oclock for the purpose of completing tho organization week and they are occupying the Dr Waters dwelling on North Main avenue Travis W Benjamin of Oberlin Kansasformerly a Burlington conductor has been in the city this week ne is unattached just now and casting about for a location Mrs William Washburn departed first of the week for Holyoke Colorado where the family will reside in future he having a regular and permanent run on the High line now Miss Mamie Chandler entertained the Awl Os Tuesday evening at the home of her sister Mrs Albert Barnett One of the features of the evening was the piano playing by Miss Robidioux of Benkelman who is an accomplished musician Henry S Ferrar supt of the Grand Island factory was up the valley close of last and first of this week in the in terest of the American Sugar Beet Co which is working to secure contracts to plant beets this season in this section of the state as usual Mrs T B Campbell received a tele gram Tuesday morning acquainting her of the death the night before of her aged mother in Wilkinsburg a suburb of Pittsburg Penna The funer al occurred on Thursday at Parnassus Pa On account of delay in receiving the telegram Mr and Mrs Campbell did not attend the funeral Mrs Camp bell has the profoundest sympathy of many friends in this sorrow Mrs J F Kenyon and Mrs H P Sutton entertained the Alphabet high five club last evening at the home of Mrs Kenyon after the usual delight ful manner of the club Dinner was served at half past six The decorations of the two dining rooms were patriotic military high five being the game play ed Fort Crook defended by Mr and Mrs Albert Barnett and Mr and Mrs W B Mills won the honors Frank Freelove arrived home Tues day morning from Norton Kansas where he had been spending a week visiting friends and hearing the famous Dewey trial He brought along with him a large photograph of the Berry ranch just after the killing showing the prostrate forms of the four Berrys on the ground Deweys dead horse the sod fence the rickety stable and house and the water tank The picture mutely tells the tale of perhaps the greatest tragedy in tho history of that bloody section of Kansas Frank says the trial is a battle royal with our ownest Deacon one go to work in the railroad blacksmith shop at that place Conductor R M Childress returned to headquarters Saturday on 13 having been called down to Republican City by the serious illness of his father Conductor and Mrs J Ed Beyrer came down from Denver closing days of week past and have been guests of Con ductor and Mrs V H Solliday On account of slack business waycars 98 and 128 have been taken out of ser vice for the present together with Con ductors Watson and Callen and crews Some of the windows in the telegraph office were thoughtlessly relieved of their weight and accumulation of smoke dust andsoforth this week and there is something doing among the oculists and green goggle dealers now Commencing last Monday February 15th the hours in the blacksmith shop machine shop and boiler shop at Alli ance were reduced from ten to eight hours per day The men now work until 1 p m instead of 6 p m as heretotore Ten or fifteen men have been iaidoff in addition to the reduction in working hours This move was made necessary on account of slack business on the road and on account of instructions being is sued that hereafter a lot of work that has been done on engines at Alliance will be done at Havelock shops where it is said that they have better facilities and it can be done cheaper It is not known how long the men will be worked on the short hours but probably until business gets Big Beet Sugar Company A sugar beet company with a capital stock of SlG000O0 incorporated under tho laws of New Jersey has filed certi fied articles of incorporation with tho secretary of state It is called tho Tri State Land company The document came from the general solicitor of the Burlington railroad at Omaha and this company is supposed to be interested in the project The incorporators are George C Knobbo James A Speer and John J OReilly The object is to pur chase and own rpal estate in the states of Nebraska Colorado and Wyoming the principal object being to raise sugar beets Under the original articles of in corporation filed in Now Jersey tho com pany is also empowered to develop lands in any part of the Unitpd States to own and to loaso irrigation ditches to build and operate beet sugar factories to deal in merchandise and to build railroads The company also has power to absorb other concerns paying therefore either in stock or cash The company first in corporated in New vault of the First National Bank of our city The work is about complete as we go to press this afternoon This system is perhaps the latest and most perfect and affords absoluto pro tection to the bank from loss by burg lary By a complete system of linings automatic electric alarms time alarms etc it is impossible to gain entrance in to the vault in any manner without the whole community being alarmed by pow erful gongs sounding on the outside of the building There are gongs inside the vault as well These alarms sound automatically and continue their infer nal din until stopped being driven after the trip of Vice president Willard over the Bur lington lines west of the river last week sixty men were let out of the round house and machine shops at McCook and that Mr Willard ordered that a lot of the work heretofore done at McCook shops be sent to Havelock shops There is much speculation as to whether or not under Mr Willards management this policy will be carried further than the
