THIS happy thought is chargeable to
Henry Ward Beecher : "I have no
sympathy for an eight-hour man with a
fourteen-hour wife. " It is respectfully
submitted for the consideration of
American labor.
OLD'KING COAL combination is a
very merry old soul afc the expense of
others. If he can't be regulated in
his unseemly mirth by State legisla
tures , Congress will have to try to re
strain his boisterous merriment.
COL. BOB INGERSOLL has temporari
ly discontinued operations on the line j
of theology , to become an impractical j
ranter against the pluck me system , j
etc. Some of the Colonel's recent
(
speeches would indicate that his hand
has lost its cunning.
AFTER yelling themselves hoarse
over the "coal find , " the Omaha papers
have now come , to this sensible conclu
sion : "Before .we rend the air with
hosannas , brethren , let us make sure
we have something to shout over. "
The resolution should be unanimously
adopted.
"ONE thing is certain , " says the
Louisville Courier-Journal , ( deui. ) "the
president cannot afford to make many
more mistakes either as to measures or
as to men , if he hopes to stay where he
is , and the democratic party can not
afford to win any more victories and get
nothing for them. " I

IT is related in Buffalo that a young
married man of that city , going home
very early the other morning and en- ,
deavoring to steal quietly to the spare |
room without awakening his wife , was '
fairly paralyzed by a clear , wide-awake
voice , saying : "What was the limit ,
George ? " She had sized George up. j
GOVERNOR DAWES has removed Dr.
Matthewson from the superintendency
of the state asylum for the insane ,
the action , it is freely stated , having
been piecipitated by the continued and
increased opposition to that official by
the state board of public lands and !
buildings , against which the "bouquet
governor" finally capitulated.
"LiE on McDulF and dam'd be ho
who first cries hold , enough , " is the
terrific translation of the hoary Shake
spearian chestnut hurled at the Strat-
ton Herald's stalwart editor by the re
ligious editor of the Trenton Democrat ,
last week. The doctor entertains some
hope of Ash will's ultimate recovery' ; but ,
alas ! poor 1'orick , remorseless Morse
mortuus est. Sic transit gloria mun-
di. Rodents !
Worse Than a Fire Alarm ,
o
One of the most dreadful alarms that
can be sounded in a mother's ear is
produced by croup ; dreadful , because
it is known to be dangerous ; the more
dreadful because the life of a loved one
is in jeopardy. Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy is a never failing safeguard
against this dangerous disease. Its
reputation as a preventive and cure
ef croup is fully and firmly established.
In fact , it is the only remedy which
can always be relied upon. Sold by
