PH<*es of W heat j jUive ^av After Working Higher r c? Bad Crop News From Soutli , west Again Stimulating In* fluence in Pit; Close Weak and Lower. By CHARI.EH J. T.F.VKF.V, Universal Service Staff Correspondent. Chicago, Marcli — Bad crop new? from the .southwest was again the stimu lating influence in the wheat pit today, but alter working irregularly higher early pries gave way. Selling by eastern houses ran the market into profit taking and the close was weak and sharply lower. Light showers over scattered sec tions of the winter belt and prospects for more tended to unnerve holder?. Wheat finished 2® 3c down, corn was ®4®lc off, .-ifcis were 1h®?so lower and rye ruled 2 ** < i 31 * n lnwet. An appreciable improvement was noted in outside interest, but it failed to sus tain the flurries. Crop news on wheat arid deductions by local experts were sen sationally bullish, but the speculative frame of mind was dubious and the de mand for cash wheat was inclined to waver. The May delivery locally was relatively heavy. The seaboard confirmed moderate amounts of Manitoba s as having been worked. Otherwise the foreign inquiry was stagnant. Liverpool closed 3Ud higher. Corn was firm most of the day, but the market became overbought and when lrngs tried to unload prices faded. The consumptive demand for this grain is not satisfactory. Fash handlers say that the ♦ astern inquiry is flat, ami that industries are the only buyer? locally. {Southwest reports were more encouraging*. Oats worked higher during the first hour, but tumbled with other grains at the last. Crop news on this grain is pes simistic. but speculative.. interest is lax. uml oat prices ha e a tendency-.to sag Rye van strong early on further re ports of export business Houses with •eaboard connections bought during the first hour, but the upturns met scattered realizing. , Provisions were firm. Lard was »a ] ftc higher and ribs were 20®37HC higher. rit Note**. Swings in wheat were rapid and over a comparatively wide range. July wheat a hot above the M.50 level early, the Ugliest price >n several weeks, hut it net liberal commission hflbse selling. Eastern operators were credited with pressing the market, and the late easines.*. in securl .and cotton helped to depress the grain, list. The weather forecast was for the con tinent ion of goner? 11} dry weather over t.ie n;ajor portion of th* southwest, all oi ■which steadied the new crop deliveries on th* weak spots that were invariably caused bv the reactionary trend of the Mav delivery. A local expert was out ■with a very startling report on growing cron prospects. He saiil that early returns on winter •v. hear indicate a condition of about 7 3 compared With S3 on April I last year and «2.5 for the jo-year average, lie es timated the probable abandonment v round per cent, or over 7,500.000 acres. Condition of the plant, according to his estimates, has been lower a* season of the y-ar but oiu-e since■ «<», • londltionx Jicees* ri ■ rnp of 61n.flOO.OM bushels, r;gainst 590,000.000 bushels har x esteil las. year. Stocks wheat at primary points are decreasing in vapid style. For four day? .'.IfnneapoliK reported a reduction ol •25 000 bushels. Kansas City stocks for three days q, -reused over 400,000 bush ».lw Chicago’s stocks have certain!} fallen off so far this week*, and clearance? of wheat ami fb*ur from the seaboard have been well maintained.
