May! Wheat Goes Past $2 Levels ! in Wild Session Great Strength in Foreign Market* and Brisk Export Business Are Influences Back of B ise. By CHARLES J. LEYDEN, Universal Service Staff Correspondent. Chicago, Jan. 2S.—Swinging rapidly in mi# of th# wildest sessions since the war. May wheat shot past the $2 level today, reaching $2.05% for Ita top, and closed Just under that price. Great strength in foreign markets at Buenos Aires, Liver pool and Winnipeg, the latter closing 8 to 9c higher, combined with brisk export 'business, were ths influences back of the rise here. Wheat closed 2% to 5%c higher; corn was 1*4 to l%c advanced; oats were un changed to %c higher. §nd rye ruled %c lower to 64c higher. Trade In the wheat pit was cnormlus. Many brokers said if was the busiest day tn years. Buying orders for May wheat came in from every direction, and al though realizing sale* were extensile on every hard spot, the market absorbed tnem all. It began to look as though foreign buyers dre being stampeded into anticipating future requirement'*. Export sales for the dny were upwards rtf 1.000.000 bushels. Business in other grains was moderate. Liverpool closed » S to 4% pence higher. Corn attracted a better class of specu lative buying, this probably being in duced by th# great strength in wheat. However, the cash corn situation devel oped healthier aspects. The demand for good corn was improved, and th# basis firmer. Oats were more or less neglected. There was excellent buying evident at times, but the hard spots met pressure. May ryo moved to new tops, while the July lagged and closed lower. Buying of iye by a prominent house with, eastern connections was the feature of this pit. Provisions were firm early. but en countered scattered selling and reacted to a lower close. Lard was off 27% to 32%c, and ribs were 25c. lower. I'it Notes. World news on wheat has been coming more bullish for over a week and is back of this sensational advance in prices. All foreign markets have gained on Chicago the last few weeks. Winnipeg \vh«*at prices are up 18c a bushel the last, three days, while prices here are up a little over 9c. Liverpool has advanced its premium over Chicago. The price of wheat in the Argentine is just a trifle under ours compared with 15c under a few weeks ago. Trade in wheat was probably heavier around top levels than when the market was around the $2 price A house that has been consistently bullish on wheat for months and that bought wheat heav ily the last few days, sold freely on the extreme advances today, hut the market's absorptive abill^v ivas ther\, proved. It was believed that shorts also were liberal buyers of futures late in the session. There was little change in the bull news for the day. The stability of the local pit was explained best by the runa way prices in foreign exchangee. Foreign buyers apparently have come to the realization that the world supply and demand Is unusually close this season, and their efforts to buy ahead now are haling marked effect on ufture prices. Bed wheat, in Chicago sold at $2.20% a bushel, or 3 6c over the May price. This was sn advance of 3ftc from the previous sale. Domestic and foreign re ports indicated that rash buyers were ^urgently requesting for offers. England •specially. late in the session asked for large offerl ms of wheat, according to seaboard reports. CHICAGO PRICES. Bv T’pdlke Grain company, Atlantic 6312 Art. Climb to New High Levels Sugars, Steels, Equipments and Specialties in Demand; Rails Due to Advance; Cotton Market Better. By RICHARD KF1I.LANF., rniver*nl Sendee Financial Kilitnr. New York, Jan. 2X.—Generally speaking everything went up In today s stock mar ket. The oil* were leader*. Huylng tn the petroleujn Issues came from all part* «.f the country and from Kurope too. Amsterdam ami London were large pur chasers of the international oils. Pacific nil and the Standard Oils of t’altfornta and New Jersey were the leaders, hut Milne of the others were well up with them in vigor and popularity. The very great change in the petroleum situation due to th- subsidence of the Wortham pool seems to have changed ihe whole aspect of the oil companies, and profits now * an he seen where a few weeks ago the prospects were by no means reassur ing. Added to the great change In the oil outlook, the news from Washington that the administration planned a special ses sion of congress In the fall to take up tin* matter of ’.ax reduction had u very good effet t, and brought a good amount of confident buying. The great strength of the grains to gether wit a a better cotton market con tributed to the general optimism. Wl*at ever disappointment that had been over the steel meeting was forgotten. U._ 8. Steel itself was strong, going to 127 Vh, anti closing close to that price. Sugars, independent steels, equipments, coppers and all sorts of specialties were in excellent demand. Various specialties hud good moves and In some instances, Nash Motors particularly, remarkable ad vances were made. Halls began to move after having been quiet for some time, and there is a sug gestion thiii some of them are In for a good advance. Mon y was easy. Some .market commentators call atten tion to the fact that now, for the first time s n< * the world war, there Is an up ward movement in all the commodities. r N | New York Quotations y / New York Stock Exchange quotations furnished by J.
