Foreign Cables Stabilizing Factor in Wheat Market Trend of Grains Erratic Dur* iug Day; Close Somewhat Higher. Following , Slump. By CHARI.KN .1. I.E11IKN (niversal Service Ht«ff forrmpotiileiii. Chicago, Jan. 3.—Foreign news exerted a ataldlizing Influence In the wheat pit. today nntl though liquidation continued throughout the day prices moved up to fair gains finally. Th*» trend was un usually erratic and buyers were not near ly ns successful ns the higher market, might indicate. The locnl elements wero disgusted on the sharp hrenk late In the day. Tn the last few minutes the mar ket recovered. Wheat closed % c to 1 Vi c higher: corn wat to 1 He lower; outs were Ur to •4c lower, and rye ruled Vic to %c off. Relative steadiness In Liverpool and seaboard reports that, export iales were of large size attracted considerable fresh support during the first hour, but it was apparent that somebody was putting con siderable wheat in the pit on the flurries through commission houses. Weakness In cash corn depressed the future price. There were estimates ns high ns 1.000. 000 bushels wheat having been worked, but at that the messnges from the east were complicated. A big exporter wns credited with predicting much higher prices soon, all of which came In for comment. Liver pool closed 1 to 1M pence tower. Corn dropped under steudv selling through commission houses. The run of corn to market has Increased considerably of late and the demand has been only fair. Corn Is proving quite n problem to many In the trade, and is Inclined most of the time to follow the wheat trend. Primary receipts of corn for week to talled 5,168.000 bushels, against 3,735,000 «* bushels a year ago. Liquidation in oats has been under way for several days and has more than off set the fairly active buying on the dips. Rye lagged all day and finished lower despite the strength in wheat. Germany whs credited with taking rye for nearby shipment, but the amount was not given. Provisions Nvcre firm early, but eased under scattered commission house selling. Lard was 22*$c to 30c lower, and ribs wore 40c off. FIT NOTES. “ Chicago, Jan. 3.—The Winnipeg wheat market was Independently strong through out the session and closed 1*4^ to 2 V*.c higher. It is probable that the bulk of foreign demand for Xortji American grain at the moment Is centering In the Ca nadian article. Our prices are on a com petitive basis In the world market, and action of cash wheat In the United King dom Indicates that the supplies are far from pressing, yet longs seem willing to reduce lines on every hard spot. The pressure of southern hemisphere v heat Ns bound to show more or less In r-'Tnte from now on. Tt may be possible that the anticipation of this development 1 • |. ailin-r holders to unload regardless of the current new. Tn this country de velopments have been favorable for hlgh ••!* prices. The run of grnln from the farms keeps moderating. Primary receipts Inst week totalled 3, f,<5,000 bushels, ngainst 4,514.000 bushels the previous week, ami 2.188.000 bushels l ist yerr. The movement of grain 1n the vort Invest nnrtlcubtrly is falling off Stocks at Minneapolis have been held In restraint. Stocks at Kansas City for four days decreased 500.000 bushels. Reports were out today to the ef f 't that Ru sin would need to Import •'•1.000 tons of flour per month for the * b-Ounce of the season, while other reports • ■ edited Russia, with exporting grain. By RICHARD 8PILLANK. 1 nl verbal Service Financial Kdltor. New York. Jan. 3.—Saturday January 3, 1925. in likely to stand out hh one of the most remarkable days in the history of tin* New York stock exchange. Business was on an enormous scale. Transactions in the two hours of trading aggregated 1.645.300 shares. That would he at the rate of more than 4.000,000 shares for a lull session. The ticker was far. far behind. It was not until 12:41 that it recorded the clos ing sale made on the exchange at 13 o’clock. At that rate it would have been on hour and 40 minutes behind at the close of a full dav of five bouts of trad ing. Bullish enthusiasm was remnant hut there was a wildness to the market that made many persons fearful that specula tion was being carried beyond all reason able limit;*. United Stales Steel and Radio Corpora tion led In volume of trading. Steel was strong throughout and closed 2% up. At one time it was a full 3-points up. Radio opened at 77'li —uho same price at which It closed Friday, and did not get any higher. There was a great amount of liquidation in the stock but persons in brokerage offices were unaware of Its extent for the ticker was so far behind that while the shares were quoted at or about 71 in the broksrtfe offices it was down to 69 or 70 on the exchange. It closed at 71% after having been as low «» 68%. There was a good deal of bearish news cut rent regarding the stock, nno partic ular Item being that while a big market was being made on radio the corporation was not earning at the rate of $5 on ltn share*. Extreme advances were mads In a con-, shlers ble number of Issues. United Fruit was up 7 point*. Electric Storage Battery 5 points. Wastlnghouse 9 point* American (Can 6% points. American Bosch Magneto i was no 18 points from Its low of the previous day. There was a wide swing In the price of a lot of electric share*. The new highs were many. The average for Industrials again recorded a new top for all time. Special stocks acted so erractieally that llttl* mention to groups a* a whole. Some of the oils were moderately strong. Wheat was the only one of the grains to show strength throughout the session. I Cotton was quiet, almost dull but fair ly firm. ^ ^ I New York Quotations v - -/ New York Stock exchange quotations furnished by j. g. Bathe ft Co., 224 Omaha National Bank building. Frl. High.
