Injury to Cords ~ ^ of Nerve System Cause of Disease Resistance Is Lowered and Germs Make Inroads When Vital Force Is Shut Off. By 1>R. A. X. CARLSON. _ Does vaccination immunize'.' This has been anil probably will con tinue to btr a much discussed and argued question. with statistics pit lore to prove the argument in favor of either side. Figures, while they do not Tie, can be made to serve in various ways. > Some authorities continue to cri force the vaccination theory, v.'hil others refuse to do so, each contend ing he is right. So, who can toll? What is there about the human be ing that makes him resistive to the in vasion of germs of any and every kind. Why do some have a disease just slightly, while others are over come and others immune? Now most modern authorities agree that lack of resistance in any individual leaves hint open to infection of any and every kind, be it external or ir.ternaf. It Is taken for granted that wo are considering the individual who has sufficient nourishing food. Then, what is lacking in the person who becomes infected? There must lie lack of resistance in that. Indl vidua], or. In other words, lack of power to resist. The scat of all power or activity in the body is the brain, where it is directed to each and every part and cell of the body, along the spinal cord and its nerve branches, which directs the growth and activity of every part of the body: provided, this power is not interfered with in its course from brain to tissue cell, and creates tlie resistance necessary to prevent in fection or collision. In the course of our investigations and clinical experi ence tve have found that the usual place of interference to this power of vital force is where the nerve emits from the spinal cord, through tic opening (foramena) formed by the ver tebrae (spinal bonesi when one 01 mora slip out of place through sum. cause, usually because of accidents n, habits of incorrect posture, or some times overwork. When this power is thus interfered with, the tissue depending on it for its life lacks resistance and becomes sub ject to Infection or contagion. The chiropractor releases this vital force along the nerves bv scientifically and correctly locating and adjusting the misplaced vertebrae into their proper position, and natural resistance follows as a natural course. Merchants Report Big Holiday Trade Newcastle. .Ian. 3.—According to merchants, holiday trade in northeast Nebraska has lieen the host for a number of years, regardless of the had roads and the extremely cold weather. Vordyce. Hnrttngton, Ponca and New castle* ha\o reported exceptionally large volumes of business and other places claim that the holiday trade has been unusually good. To avoid drifted roads, dwellers In the country districts made temporary roads through pastures and corn fields In order to get to town to do their trading and make preparations for the holiday festivities. As a result of this heavy trade the merchants find themselves pretty well sold out of the holiday supply. C. P. Hose of Newcastle, by mistake, re ceived double the quantity of candy he ordered for the holidays and was sur ' •iaed when he found he needed it nil. A OVKHT1SKM ENT. AI > V KKT1MF..M ENT. Gallbladder Disease. Hy J. W. DUNCAN. People generally have the impres sion that the gallbladder la a small sac which acts as a reservoir for bile and which empties Itself regularly and completely just ns does the blad der that contains the urine.' Unfor tunately, tills Is not true. It has heert found thut one of the chief causes of Inflammation of the gall bladder and gallstones is the ten dency for the bile to stagnate in the gallbladder. This organ cannot drain Itself because of the position In which It lies and there Is not enough muscle In Its walls to squeeze Itself empty. The fact that diseases of the gull ldailder are found most often In peo ple who are heavy eaters, overweight and constipated and who lake little exercise lead to investigation. This investigation showed that the best way to keep the bile moving freely through the liver and in and out ol the gallbladder is by deep breathing, plenty of exercise and the use of the abdominal muscles. These measures In a fashion, squeeze the gallbladder between the surrounding structure! and thus aid tt In emptying. When the bowels are active the little muscle closing the opening from the gallblad der find idle ducts into the Imwel is more active and this permits the emptying of the gallbladder more often. People who eat sparlngly^nnd at regular intervals and who drink large quantities of water and take plenty of exercise usually do not de velop gallbladder trouble. Suffer Utile Tain. Many people will' not believe that cause they suffer little, if any, pain causethey suffer little, if any, pain and because all their trouble seems to be with their digestion. As a matter of fact one of the commonest causes of Indigestion Is gallbladder disease and If a person Is "fat and over 40” and lias stomach trouble that person has every reason to suspect the gall bladder as being at the botom of his complaint. Only a smull proportion of people who have gallbladder dis ease have gallstones and gallstone colic is not found in some of the most serious attacks of the gallbladder dis ease. Some of the worst cases are ♦ those that have pus In the gallblad der or have very badly Inflamed and thickened walls and do not have gall stones. Stones in the gallbladder very otfen do not show on the X-ray film as do kidney stones or urinary bladder stones which nearly always show plainly. This is because stones In the gallbladder are of a different corniKmition and the Xray passes through them without casting a shadow . If a doctor says he cannot show gallstones with the X-ray it does not mean, necessarily, that they are not present In any rase. A good diagnostician's word that you have gallstones is worth much more than an X-ray film that says you haven t. Besides, if tiie gallbladder Is in flamed it really does not make very much difference whether or not it contains stones for the inflnmation itself can and does quite as much trouble as gallstones. This is the reason that the doctor often advises operation for gallbladder trouble when ho is not sure that stones are present. At the operation the gall bladder is either removed entirely or it is drained and the inflammation re lieved. in most cases It is removed hut sometimes, for certain reasons, it is necessary that it be saved and drained only. Which of these two things should be done ought to he left to the judgment of the surgeon at the time the operation is per formed. There are no had effects from the removal of the gallbladder and people get along very well with out it. Great Kciicf Given. Medical treatment in early cases of gallbladder disease is often very helpful. Even in well advanced cases, if the person cannot stand an operation, diet and medicine give great relief. There is no medicine known that will dissolve gallstones. Xo honest doctor will toll a patient that he can give medicine that will make them pass gallstones. Some particles nf sand, so small they can not be seen, will sometimes escape. But gallstones as large as walnuts which people sombtimea declare they have passed would have to go thruogh passives no larger than a small slate pencil to get to the bowgj and that is of course, Impos sible. These so-called gallstones are nothing hut small pieces of soap which are formed by the action of the digestive juices on the medicine administered. They are tinged with Idle and moulded into balls by the movement of the intestine, thus taking on the appearance of gall stones. The only way to get rid of gall stones is by a surgical operation which is very safe and satisfactory in skilful hands. .Vot over two per cent of such operations are fatal and over 90 per cent of the suffer* ors are permanently relieved.
