After two days of desperate effort to restore telephone service, line crews found Tuesday that they had lost ground In Omaha. Nearly 850 lines were out of commission in Oma ha Tuesday morning, while only 700 were out Monday. Long-distance service has improved somewhat, but only 32 of the 136 trunk lines of the Northwestern Hell company were In operation. Conner, tlons were made with Minneapolis, Chicago, Kansas City and Lincoln, but service west of Lincoln was Im possible. Officials of the company said It was impossible to predict when serv ice would be restored to normal. Al though every available lineman has been working almost constantly since the outbreak of the storm, the ex treme cold and the high winds have snapped wires and poles faster than they can be replaced. In Omaha, of ficials said, new line and pole con struction Is required on 670 of the 850 lines out of commission. Kearney Hard Hit. Telegraph and telephone lines ware reported to be crippled at Kearney, Neb. Country phone lines were dam aged by the sleet. The temperature was two above zero Tuesday morning. Train service at Kearney was not In terrupted along the main lines, branch lines had (o be dug out by snow plows. Between Atlantic and Adair, la., 43 telephone poles were snapped off. Some poles fell upside down. Tempor ary headquarters for repair men have been established at Atlantic. A D V KKTlSEM E> T. The instru ment is an indicator of trouble along the lines. Snow and Ice, In some instances more than an Inch thick, have torn down wires and broken off telephone, poles. This picture was made in Ben nington, X’eb. Weight of the ire on the wires has y inscij hundreds of miles of wire <■’' **breakage. With 110,000 miles of wire of the Northwestern Bell Telephone company out of service during the period of snow and sleet storm, perhaps the busiest spot Is the toil test and ter minal room on the ninth floor of the telephone building. On these test boards, before which 15 men and women sit working, is an instrument 10 by 15 inches with an indicator and ordinary balance that tells tlie wire tester Just where breaks occur. The break can be determined within a few miles by the resistance of this Instrument, known as Wheat' stone's bridge. By rapid calculation every point of breakage can he found within a few minutes by the testers. W. L.
