Prices of Wheat Drop, Then Reach New High Levels Dips in Market Were Short Lived; Corn Soars After Sharp Break; Oats Move Upward. 1 By ( HAKLEP J. I.KTDKN. Universal Service Staff < orrespnndent. Chicago, Dec. f>—Wheat prices today moved back and forth most of the ses sion, seemingly headed for lower levels, but In the last few minutes shot, up to new highs for the year anil closed there. Timely support gradually absorbed all of ferings, largely profit taking, and when shorts started to cover they had trouble in finding anyone willing to sell. Wheat closed 1 % <0 2c higher, corn was higher, oats were H01Hc up and rye ruled %01%c higher. Many great bulls had sold out their wheat and corn holdings the last few da * and were awaiting a chance to re ins'ite their lines. This idea spread through the trade and engendered con-1 si 1 cable bear sentiment. The dips ini the market were short-lived, however, and it was noticeable that prominent Inter ©«•* were among the best buyers. The seaboard confirmed export sales of 7Ub,000 bushels wheat, Including a cargo t"f gulf. The United Kingdom bought Manltobun. Export sales were reported effected at the best levels of the year. The Liverpool market finished *4(1 higher to Hd lower. Corn hit new lilghs early and then dropped sharply under heavy realizing, hut in the last hour excellent support de veloped nnd the market soared. Stop loss orders in May corn were caught in profusion above $1.27%. The movement of corn from the Interior Is likely to he seriously delayed the next few (lays on account of unfavorable weather condi tions. Oats had another day of rising prices. The feature of the session was the heavy demand from northwest houses that were pollers a few days ago. Rye moved upward with other grains. Trade in this pit was not large, but there was a lack of pressure, and the buying power sufficed. Provisions sold off early but rallied brisk l v and closed at top levels. Lard was 20 0 2714c higher and ribs were 25c higher. Pit Notes. December wheat sold at a discount of 41 a c uftder the May at one time and closed at 4 %c under. This compared with a discount of 8*4c last week. The rela tive buoyancy In the current momh has been due to the persistent buying by cash interests against sales of the May who have been shifting their hedges. Reports that a large number of freight cars were ? standing at elevators awaiting to load wheat f**r the east was a factor In the day’s rise. Local stocks of wheat and other grains are likely to be reduced within a week's time. The movement of wheat from the country is showing decided reduction and inroads Into the visible supply are rapidly being approached. The domestic milling demand is broadening appreciably. Duluth .confirmed large mill sales of flour for do mestic account. St. Louis advised that Carolina mills were after hard and soft i winter wheat In that market, an unusual demand. * Spot wheat In Liverpool was up 102d. Rroomhall states that foreigners are likely to take 128,000,000 bushels wheat out of this country from January to July. This amount is about double the amount that the bulls figure we will have left for sale at the first of the year. A striking featuro of th« enormous ex port business that has been on In do mestic wheat the last few months might j be easily seen when one considers the amount of grain moved in the northwest. Alinneapolia and Duluth so far this season have shipped out 142,000.000 bushels wheat, this comparing with 72,000.000 busheis last year for the same period. Stocks of wheat at Minneapolis are no larger than a year ago, and Indications are that they will begin to decrease pres ently. Th6 bumper spring wheat crop this year "has been marketed on a steadily ad vancing price trend, a truly wonderful feat. CHICAGO PRICES. By Updike Grain Co., Atlanlle 9312 I Open. I High. ! I.osv.
