CODE REVEALED IN FDBEBS TRIAL Cypher for Secret Messages Bared hv Cliieg Gov ernment Witnes®. Br AMotlatrd Prrn». Chicago, Jli'c*' B.—The secret code agreed upon by the alleged conspira tors In the veterans' bureau hospital construction program, was examined today by the jury in the trial of Charles ft. Forbes, the former direc tor 6f .the bureau, and Jphu W. Thompson, St. Louis contractor. Klias H. Mortimer, chief govern ment witness, said the code was pre pared by C. B. Hurley, Seattle con ti actor, for use by himself, Morti mer. Forbes, Thompson and James Black, Thompson's partner, and others in the alleged conspiracy. The code word for Forbes was "McAdoo” and for Forbes' secretary, Sweet, it 4 was "Pickles.” Gave Forbes Copy. Mortimer testified he gave Forbes his copy of the code and a little red dictionary, used as llie key, at Hay den Lake, Idaho. Randolph Laughlln of St. Louis, counsel for J. W. Thompson, asked , the court for the privilege of examin ing John J. Brennan of Detroit, presl t dent of the Pontiafc Construction com pany, which got the first veterans’ hospital contract. It was for the Northampton, Mass., hospital founda tions. The Pontiac company was a subsidiary of the James Black Mason ry anil Construction company of st. Louis. Black, now deceased, being a business associate of Thompson. * Brennan actually closed, the con tracts for the NorthamptonVjob with veterans’ bureau officials while Forbes was on the Pacific coast. Set 60-Da.v Limit. The Pontiac company’s bid was $.14, 000 higher than the lowest bid, but its construction time limit was 60 days against 120 days for the other bidders. The government charges as part of tho veterans’ bureau conspiracy that Forbes had agreed to - favor the Thompson-Black group of contractors through special features of their bid. Brennan, who had been summoned as a government witness, was also de sired by the defense to identify office tiles of the Pontiac company, relating to veterans’ bureau hospital contracts, particularly the one at Northampton. Brennan, because of Illness in his family, desired to return to Detroit until ready to go on the stand. John H. Olm, government counsel, said he would not be ready for Brennan fora few days, but Crim said he had no ob ( jection to Brennan's examination by the defense. DRIVER FINED $50 IN DOUBLE CRASH ■1. A. County Judge Bryce Crawford ordered thirteen residents in the vi cinity of Twentieth and Twenty fourth and Pierce streets to pay Hob art Strehlow $2.50 each and costs of Strehlow s suit. Forty persons signed a petition cir culated by Morgan & Sirehlow, ap pointing them as their attorneys and authorizing them to take action in having the alley between Pierce street and Poppelto'n avenue repaired from Twentieth to Twenty fourth street. Twenty of the petitioners refused to pay the attorney fees, declaring that nothing had been done to im prove the alley, which was torn up in the laying of a sewer. Strehlow testified that he had had conferences for a month with the contracting company but had obtained no action. Suit was dismissed against seven defendants. The defense alleged that the petition was misrepresented to the Italian residents who were un able to speak English and that the signers were told that there would be no cost.
