Price of Wheat Firm in Spite of Restricted Trading Wet Weather in Canada Boosts Prices Here; Corn Closes Slightly Off; Rye Makes Small Advance. By CHAK1.KS .J. J.F.YDKN. t nivenutl Service Staff Correspondent. Chicago, Sept. 19.—Although the Volume of trade was not broad, wheat prices were generally firm today, com-1 mission houses taking the slack out of the pit on the brei^r. Wet weather In western Canada started prices on the upgrade at Winnipeg and this helped boost prices here, notwithstanding the ex port demand showed a considerable slump. WheHt dosed unchanged to foe higher, corn was fofjifoc lower, oats were foe off to foe higher, and rye ruled foiPfoc up. Frequent rallies were recorded in the leading cereal, but they were short-lived. The market kept within a narrow range, meeting buying on the dtps and selling on the bulges. Home long wheat can* out at the start, due principally td the failure of Liverpool to follow the closing advance In North America the previous day. The strength at Winnipeg caused a fair-sized bulge later in the session, the kdvanco being well held until the close. Corn 1'p and Down. Spot wheat at Liverpool closed un changed to 1 fo pence higher, while the futures there finished fo (tt-fo pence high er. This firmness was reported due to decressed offerings. Prices for corn were a trifle higher at the opening. Later there was in creased pressure, and while there were several rallies, the close was lower and the buying demand did not follow the advances. .Strength in wheal was a check to selling and some of the shorts did not fancy the weather forecast, indicating cooler conditions over Sunday. «*asli prices were firm and there was a good general demand. Sluggish movements In prices character ized the oats trade. At no time were quotations indicative of much outside in terest. Commission houses had plenty of buying orders on the dips, but not enwlgh to lift the market out \>f the rut. Rye was druggy at times, (|ue to ft slow speculative demand. Export sales of 500, 000 bushels rye were reported by the sea board and advices from abroad were bull ish. (ash Market Strong. Provisions dosed fairly strong I.ard was 5*-18 foe higher «nd ribs were un changed. Notes. While the export demand was inclined to drag on til* advances m futures, the local cash market was strung mlutiveiy with prices foe to lc better relatively tor the good grades, and as mu h as Lj higher for some of tire lower grades. This development, coupled with the small de liveries of only 57.00U bushels, and a relative gain of foe in the September, were considered a** significant. Lead ng elevator interests are credited with be*ng long a tremendous amount of the Sep tember, and the narrowing of thu spread between September and December to around 4 cents was not considered an in dication of weakness. The weather sinewed general gains in •western Canada, but the countiy deliv eries are showing a substantial increase although naturally much smaller than a week ago. Winnipeg reported countiy marketings at 2.183,uoO bushels compared with 5.250.000 bushels a year ago, and country loadings at 94* cars against 2,4'<> cars a year ago, Winnipeg receipts should be materially heavier tho coming week. Today they were 320 cars against 1,537 cars a year ago. Export# From Russia. Liverpool was lfo pence higher at one time. biA closed fo to fo pence liighet. Broomhall cabled that there would be exports of wheat, barley and rye from Russia which was contrary to the views recently expressed. However, the buying of wheat and rye In this country does not Indicate much pressure from Russia or anywhere else. Seaboard exporters now In Europe are sending extremely bul’;?h reports In regard to old world market conditions. Primary receipts were 1.924,000 bush els against 1.832,006 bushels a year Run Local arrivals were 17* cars. Northwest receipts were 1,011 care against 512 cars a year ago, with the big end of the movement still headed for Duluth. Gulf premiums were about an high as they nave been at any time and there is a steady business In Duluth spring wheat. Cash sales from here were 115,000 bush els with 500.000 bushels reported taken at. the seaboard. Clearances for the week were 12,227,000 bushels against 5, 426,000 bushels a year ago. CHICAGO CHICKS. B, KK'HAKO KCILI.ANK. Inlverwl Service Financial Kditur, New York, Sept. 19.—There wan a hesitant tone to the stock market early in the session today. Some broker* uh crlbed it to the l.a Follette gathering in Madison Square Garden Thursday night. Wall street does not admire the senator from Wisconsin but it waa Impressed by the news that ti.UOO of those who at tended paid teal liionoy to hear the can didate speak. Paying for admission to a political gathering is a novelty, it was suggested in bulletin* issued by some brokerage houses. Hut there are other causes than the La Follette meeting. One of them was that the oil situation waa aggravated by further cut* in prices. Another was that ihe market hud been overbought Thurs day. dome of the market leaders were pushed up in the forenoon. They didn't move easily and toward noon there was a sharp breuk under which steel. Can, Gen eral Electric and others dropped from 1 ** to ft points in short order. it was omy a squall, but while it lasied it was heavy. then the market righted itself and thereafter advanced in a moderate manner. The tobaccos again were the strong features. Making shares again were active and higher. the rubbera, now that they are pros pering. have become quite popular. Nearly all of this group made headway. Some of the rails did well, Western Pacific and Missouri Pacific repeating their performance of the day before. Worthington Pump again was promi nent. At one time It was up 3 points. 'ihe market was not impressive al though some issues made large advance*. Transactions aggregated 315,60u shares Hails on an average declined i-llth of a point. industrials advanced on an average of one-fifth of a point. F'oreign exchange slightly lower. Money unchanged Oraiils were much mora moderate In their fluctuation*. Wheat, which was weak in i lie forenoon, stiffened later in Ihe session. Reports from the Argentine were that conditions there were much improved since the drouth had been luokt-n. Winnipeg was stronger then Chicago and this had the effect later in the day of stiffening thn American matket. Exports were estimated at [kO.nUu bushels. The close w at a gain i»f frpin -hiC to a*c a bushel. Corn whs droopy. Reports from tha farming territory were of somewhat bet ter conditions for ths crop. At no time in the da j» was there much of a show of bullishness and tha close waa at *4c to ^*c down. Oa:a wwie fairly strong but narrow in range, cubing from V»c to up. Rye closed from >4 <■ to %c up. Lard for a novelty did not move aa did corn and advanced 10 to 13 points. Coffee again advanced, this time 2 to 9 points, while sugar was extremely dull, i losing from 1 point down to 2 up. With promise of a nomewhat better situation in the New England textile field and a definite feeling that the crop will not exceed 13,00n.000 bales, there was a moderate continuation of the re covery Jn • otton. r a New York Quotations j y _' - J New York Stock etchant* Quotation* furnished by \L S.
