Detroit, Nov. 28.—Fire starting from an overheated stove in a watch man's ghanty early today destroyed the potrott and Windsor Ferry com pany dock, housing United States im migration and customs offices, spread to the six-story Munger building, which was burned to the ground and then destroyed a four-story ware house and several small buildings on Woodward avenue and Bates street. When the fire was brought under cbntrol a few minutes after 5 o'clock this morning, the total loss was esti mated at 31,500,000. The warehouse of the Fjnsterwald Furniture company was consumed by the flames, fanned by a brisk easterly breeze. The fireswept section, at the foot of Woodward avenue, was one of the oldest in the city and some of the hiuldings burned had been standing 50 years. They were as tinder before the flames. Three persons were injured, one probably seriously. Frank Kelly, a fireman, was knocked from a ladder when a hose slipped from the hands of hosemen. l He fell 30 feet to the ground. Robert \ Yates, the watchman, was burned ^^l*out the face and hands when he ^^attempted to check the fire. Carl Kreslin, another watchman, was over come by smoke. Every downtown fire company, many from the outlying sections and three fire boats fought the flamc-s. Two minutes after the first waridng had been sounded the fire had eaten Into the Finsterwald warehouse and great flames that lighted up Windsor, across the Detroit river, were shoot ing skyward. Before the fire com pany could reach the scene the flames had spread to the six-story Munger building across *he alley. HUNGER STRIKER DENIED BURIAL London, Nov. IS.—Bishop Cohalan of Cork has refused to allow the re- ' llglous exercises which constitute Christian burial for the body of Com mandant Dennis Barry, who died from the effects of a hunger strike at New Bridge and whose body reached Cork last evening, says a press as sociation dispatch from Cork to day. Explaining the reasons for his re fusal in a letter to the Cork Examin er the message states, Bishop Coha ]an says he regrets very much being obliged to take the course he did, but declares that If it was his own brother who took the course Com mandant Barry took, lie would deal with the case In the same way.
