Former. Omaha Champion
Ciiis Over Prw-nt Title
Holder in Straight
Sets at Lincoln.
Lincoln, Xdt Ann. II (Special
Telegram.) -Ralph Powell retained
.hi title of (talc championship (or the
fourih tune in ht was probably
the fattest trnnii match ever staged
on a Nebraska court this afternoon
when he defeated K. K. McCormirk
in straight nets, 6-4, 6-1. 7-5. tioth
men played a upcctacular name and
it was brill inure matched againit
brilliance, with Powell having an ad
mitten edge.
Both men played deep most of the
time, I owell coming in clone on hn
own service. They made hot that
seemed impossible am! neither con
testant resorted to lobbing. Powell
cored 111 points and McCor
mirk, 86.
There were but four love games,
Powell winning all of them. McCor
mick nerved six double faults, while
Powell served none.'
Their placement of shot kicked
tip the white dust time after time
and the gallery, which numbered
1,000 people, marveled at the ac
curacy displayed.
1 he first four games went to
deuce, Powell taking the first and
third and McCormick 'the second and
fourth. It was the first time Towell
has been forced to extend himself
in the present state tournament or
since he began winning state titles.
He worked hard from start to finish.
He seemed just as fast as ever re
gardless of his overweight, and at
times was invincible. He returned
strokes that should have gone as per
fect placemcnts"iii McCormick's rec
ord. .
