The Johnson Connty Journal tells the following whopper: A man erec ted some kind of a new fangled pump ing apparatus for a ranch on the Re publican valley. The pumping ma chine, was to be driven by wind. The other day when a ten-knot wind was blowing, the inventer -"turned her loose." In less than half an hour the machine flooded the cattle corral with water and floated away the end of a haystack. The ranchman yelled to his machinist: "Stop her! stop her." But it happened that provision icr stopping was what had not been thought of by the inventor. The republic is not the re nult of accident but of design. The pa ge of history prove thin fact. Right has ever triumphed ou American soil and love for our country u the noblct eutiment that can inspire our heart. "BieMthcs there a .nan with tool so dead. We can't turn back. The ten dency of our natures is onward and upward. If we look down our heads become faint with the height we have already attained and we had better turn our gazo toward the sun and climb on. We may consider the char acter of this progress. It is not the kind of progress that is achieved by the clash of arms, or bought with the groans of the dying. It is not the kind of progress that robs families of lowd ones, and fills fond hearts with grief and despair. It is not the kind of pro gress that fills a world with desolation, that one nation may aggrandize her self. It is not the kind of progress that gilds despot's courts and enslaves and impoverishes a people. But it is the kind of progress that advances and en enlightens humanity; that causes the heart of man to swell with a desire to burst assunder ihu shackles of moral intelectual and physical slavery, and stand forth in the bright sunlight of God a man. It is the kind of pro gress that teaches that intelligence, liberty and industry are the only true sources of happiness and prosperity. The kind of progrej-s that tends to make mankind throughout the world purei and better. We may learn a lesson from tho career ol past and dead nationalities. Wo may by study ing their history, profit by their mis take. We may learn by observation to avoid tho chasms that have eu gulfed tho most promising govern ments of ancient times. Tho experi ence of the ages is ours. We have no need to fail in progressive advance ment or degenerate into a lifeless peo ple. Our very institutions, our na tional characterisiics. our past and our future demand progress. Let Us then with confidence, continue in the path way of the past. Let us strive if possi ble to lovo our country more. Let us move onward, each individual con cious of the duty we owe to posterity. We are proud of the past, of its patri ots, its statesmen, its philosophers, its men of genius. We cherish the names of thrift who .".J hve marched in the van of progress, fet us diaw an inspiration from their Fglorious lives, and walk in the way that they have trod, so that future gen erations may look hack to the present day and speak admiringly of our work, so that in the glorious day when our nationality shall shine preeminent, humanity shall feel that this age of American progress has shed radiance and gladness upon the pathway of mankind, throughout the earth. Would that the words I have spoken !o-day, may sink deep into your hearts md that you go forth to your work feeling that the responsibility resting upon you as American teachers is not one to be thrown aside lightly. May you feel that you owe a debt to the land that gave you birth; that it is as much your duty to instruct your pupils with regard to the responsibili ties of citizenship as it is to teach them any facts of mathematics. And though your pupils ma seem dull and heed less, your training will crop out in af ter life, and seed that seems to fall on rugged rock, may drop into seams and crevises, reach the rich soil be neath, aud in years to come, take root, spring up and bear fruit a hundred fold; and your labor, though unseen by mankind will not go unrewarded. The broad satisfaction of knowing that the impress of your moulding baud will be felt in the future of the nation, will be glory enough for one, I think. If I have entertained you and have given any one of my audience a better, broader idea ot our native land; if I have filled any heart with the thought that it is a grand, a glorious thing to bo an American, I have accomplished all that I had designed.
